Great thread JJJ.

I think I am a closet Mary...

Just look what happens when you switch on TV or radio, sex, murder, blood, incest, rape, drugs, more blood, nudity, cruelty, sadism, graphic homosexual shows that show almost everything, *******ism on prime time family shows (was it neighbors or home and away?) cop shows trying to outdo each other in shocking and horrific homicides, people screaming, begging, whimpering and crying while being beaten or tortured, blokes crying openly on reality shows on national television, who is screwing who on big brother live?....where does it stop?

I think freedom of expression has gone too far. If anyone disagrees, then perhaps it is because it's been so prolific for so long, the we have become desensitised by being flooded with it everywhere. Even the family Simpsons is flaunting some pretty raunchy and adult themes now. What's worse, is the kids get the jokes. Cartoons used to be for kids. Family guy? I don't think so....

I'm glad my son has grown up and I don't have to worry about any of my young ones being exposed to this. Unfortunately, I couldn't protect him from it either. Now that he is desensitised, i wonder how he will view it when he has kids? There seems to be no avoiding it. You can't even stop it on a computer anymore. They all have to have one nowadays for their education.

Normal and harmless..well, that's to be debated. Personally, I loath turning the TV on. Catalyst, a bit of news (risky too) and DVD's so I can control what goes into my head to some extent. That's about it.

Some might say I am narrow minded, but if it means trying to limit all this negative filth and disgusting human vices festering in the minds of my children, those I love and myself, then you bet I am!

ahhhh...I feel better...

Thanks Jeanette, Yep, big, big Goodies fan here. Love the "Sex and Violence" episode with the obvious parody of Mary Whitehouse with the character "Mrs. Desiree Carthorse" - Spittin' image of her. Have to agree with Bazz in some respects. No prude this way, but I watch almost no TV for the reasons he put forward. I don't find violence and blatant sex entertaining or so called reality shows with scripted happenings, hosted by people with painted on smiles. The only good thing is it shows how far down we have slipped in the civilisation index.

As for Mary, she went way over the top at times, but what can you expect from someone who's surname rhymes with toilet (as Mr William Connolly was heard to remark ) :)

I must add that this was the jewel of The Goodies, it was social commentary of its day with very poignant messages in nearly all episodes.

Bill, it's a real bone of contention. There are limited releases of collections but not in full Seasons like every other TV show in the history of Television. I think the Beeb is withholding them or something similar to this.

http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=723020 (http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=723020) - This has the episode referred to in this thread "Gender Education"

http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=730972

http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=733612

And their LWT season is on DVD, complete. You'll have to search for it, sorry, running out of time.

Looking forward to seeing at least some of them again, especially the lighthouse one, being an ex lighthouse person myself :)

There's so many good episodes that you just can't name one.

The only shows I regularly watch on telly are Spicks and Specks and The Gruen Transfer.
Though with Red Dwarf starting up again I reckon I'll be putting that on the menu too.

MrB
29-05-2009, 12:29 AM
Ah, well, that explains that then. LOL
I've been keeping an eye on feebay for months trying to score a Goodies set and kept seeing the same ones over and over... have to admit was starting to wonder if a set existed.

Atleast Monkey is available as a box set, there's even 13 episodes that were never dubbed in english, been done now tho with the original voices. Just wish I could score one at a decent price.

We have linked Mary Whitehouse to the Goodies, then Monkey. What about that other great show that came on at 6:00 PM before Dr Who, The Kenny Everett Video Show. Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall at a dinner party with Kenny Everett and Mary Whitehouse (and throw in Roger Waters and Hot Gossip for light entertainment):eyepop:

Those were the days eh? The Afternoon Show on ABC.

I miss all those great shows that were on before Dr Who.
Some more greats were Trap Door, Astroboy, go go Gadget, Roger Ramjet.... and ofcourse Danger Mouse(voiced by David Jason.... Inspector Frost, G G G Granville)..... There were stacks of em.
Strangely tho, I rarely watched the doc, I'd hang around for the music but then go do something else.

The Banana Splits! I used to love that show as a kid. I found a few episodes at our local video show and thought I'd show my kids what I used to love in the old days. After a few minutes viewing I thought..."what is this rubbish??"

Up and at em' Atom Ant.
And what about Batfink...."Your bullets cannot hurt me, my wings are like a shield of steel"
and that all time classic from the early 60's "The Nutty Squirrels Present" Their theme song is totally awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oObZFYsBMUM

I've some episodes of the Banana Splits on video, and I've got to admit that they aren't as funny as I remember them to be.:(
I should have just kept my happy memories.

I know we have digressed a bit off topic but...
I was fortunate enough to see them live in Melbourne in 2006 at the Arts Centre - 4 rows from the front of the stage. One of my most memorable nights of my life.

And yes, this ABC after school!!! Astroboy, Roger Ramjet, The Goodies, Monkey, Catweazle, and in the 80's, Metal Mickey!

The Goodies have been more popular in Australia since their first run of episodes because of the fact that Aunty repeated them ad-nauseum for years, unlike the BBC, who I believe never showed re-runs.

Quote:

Pugwash!

Claim: The characters on the British TV cartoon series Captain Pugwash had names that were sexual double entendres.

Status: False.

Origins: The Captain Pugwash cartoon, which originally ran on the BBC between 1958 and 1967, is widely believed to have featured characters with risqué maritime names such as Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger the Cabin Boy. In fact, the crew of the famous Black Pig ship included sailors with no such names .....

The rest can be read at ... http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/pugwash.asp

Sorry to disillusion all who have subsribed to this most interesting myth. I even thought I remembered these names being used myself. Strange how we can convince ourselves of things that aren't quite correct hey?

Cheers,

Hell I even remember the opening music??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpIlLqfd_xI but hey this is not the cartoon I remember going with the song???

The one I am thinking of had badly drawn characters with human mouths superimposed over the top who worked a tug boat. Gonna have to check up on this one or is my memory really falling to pieces:shrug: (I think it very well may be).

rofl speaking of collingwood, the other night at work, a pair of loudmouth chick bogans parked next to me, they were loud and stupid, typical bogans, and their car was a 20 year old toyota Corolla, and they took some 10 mintues to finally emerge from their car, perhaps suffering difficulting unbuckling their belts and removing themselves from the vehicle....finally....which was a beaten up old bomb, with a COLLINGWOOD sticker on the left passenger window....

Shows the danger of the rise of the sickening influence of the do-gooders of this world.

All you can say is really is "knickers" !!

(Note: That on ABC2 they followed this program with "Luminous", which are songs and music played by the Australian Chamber Orchestra set to the pictures and art of the controversial artworks of Bill Henson. Coincidence?

"Hey you, Whitehouse,
Ha ha charade you are.
You house proud town mouse,
Ha ha charade you are
You're trying to keep our feelings off the street.
You're nearly a real treat,
All tight lips and cold feet
And do you feel abused?"

Filth was unwatchable - puerile and boring. It might have been watchable it it had been made as a documentary, but these reconstructions are dreadful, no sane human beings behave like that, not even namby-pamby churchy town mouses.

The other thing was the soundtrack - the music slathered over the top is a sure sign of very little real content.

And what they put on afterwards wasn't any better.

The funniest tid-bit on Whitehouse was before she died in 2001, she stated her two favourite programs on the telly, were Aussie "Neighbours" and the Snooker!
In the end, IMO, she remains as narrow-minded individual
The program tonight was, as Wavytone says, a little too overly dramatised. Agreed. A documentary would have been much better.

Note: I also like in real life, when Monte Python's John Cleese said in one of their sketches; "Mary Whitehouse has taken Umbrage, that could mean a bit of trouble."
