Hi all,

I decided to have a crack at imaging through the ED80 without a field flattener. Well lets put it this way, if there was a field curvature category at SPSP last weekend I would have won it for sure. This was taken at 600mm rather than 480mm FL with the WO 0.8x that I usually use. Temps are starting to come down in Canberra (roll on winter! I want my sub zero), most of this run was taken at around 7 degrees C.

Edit: just clicked on the high resolution image in your Flickr gallery and now I notice the curvature. Yikes! I think I might place an order in for one of those William Optics flatteners.

nice michael, the curvature s noticable ,.... given you pointed it out i looked for it, but the main object is within the tighter regions on the image you linked, nice density in the neb, and good star colors. if only you had another flattener to give you this FL ( i tried the mpcc on my ed80 but still had corner smearing). certainly worth a look.

Should be rather happy with this result Michael. Colour balance looks on the money with some nice details on display. Correcting the field curvature will improve the aesthetics. Keep them coming.

I imaged the same object last night with a WO 0.8x field flattener in place, I only managed 10 x 10mins before the clouds shut down the run. Once I get that stack processed I will post it up for a comparison.

Rob - the corners of the image look a bit dodgy, check out the stars and you will see them looking out of whack compared to the center of the frame. Using a field flattener should correct this, I have a WO flattener which I used last night.

Still a very decent image with just a tad of cropping I'd reckon though...

For sure, I'm still learning as well :)

Essentially you are right, a bit of a crop and it will improve the look of the image. I still have to stack the data I picked up last Wednesday night, I might get a chance to do that today.
