I have a stopover in HK for 2 days coming up and naturally am keen to see if there are some astronomy bargains there. I'm in the market (at a good price) for quality eyepieces, maybe a CCD camera and a quality refractor. Anyone with experience or suggestions for HK? :help:
If its no good I'll sight see instead.

Never been Peter (would love to one day)
HK dealer I and others deal with is Peter Tan, he is an online dealer, don't know if he has a "shopfront". Here is his web address...

He has lots of tasty gear. His email address is at the bottom of his webpage.
Have fun in Honkers!!

There is a pretty good proper astro shop too in HK, that carries all the Tak line and then some.
Off the top of my head I can't remember the name... maybe try googling Hong Kong Takahashi - that might find it.
A friend bought one of the orange Tak astrographs there and hand carried it back through the airport in its box - no extra charges in anti-astronomy tax at all! :)
Regards,
Rob
PS. Not the one I was thinking of, but: http://www.grandeye.com.hk/
This is the one I was trying to remember: http://www.sdscience.com
And also try

Thanks Rob for the links,
I'll do some homework and compare the prices and hope the exchange rate stays strong for the next 2 weeks

Just back from overseas and the stopover in Hong Kong. It really is a fascinating place, I hadn't been before. Bought stuff from both Anthony http://www.grandeye.com.hk/ and Peter http://www.tan14.com/gears.htm . They don't have shopfronts but work from home and have low overheads and excellent prices on most of their high end equipment. Both are very nice people and I would recommend them if you were travelling there or order via post. I don't want to start another argument about supporting local vendors versus buying overseas. I live in Perth where the local vendor/s are few, have limited stock and reluctance to match prices in my experience. Again don't want to start an argument or ill feeling, I've seen it can be a very sensitive topic to some, just trying to be helpful and give feedback on the HK experience, particularly those who responded to my original post and helped me. Cheers guys
P.S. Apologies to Perth members as my new equipment is probably responsible for the miserable weather at the moment and the forecast for the next few days despite new moon pending. Frustrating.....
Happy if anyone wants to PM and find out more specifics, neither of the websites is great, they both have access and stock on other stuff too

Thanks Trevor,
just glad I wasn't in all that turbulence on the QANTAS flight today. The 5 nights I have been back I have not even seen a star with all the clouds to be tempted to get the new stuff out, despite new moon. It doesn't look any better for the rest of the week either.:(

Since I returned from Hong Kong and Milan 2 weeks ago Perth has had miserable weather continuously and I haven't been able to test out my new astro goodies from Hong Kong. I did pick up a canon 500D and took some photos that may be of interest, at least one has an astronomy flavour.
In Milan I woke about 2:00 AM on the night 13/14 June and out of my hotel room window on the top floor was the Jupiter Moon conjunction. Moon is horribly over exposed but the Milan roofline in the foreground is mildly interesting. The one photo with my compact canon 5MP is of Hong Kong island from Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. The other 2 are the Duomo (Cathedral) in Milan with the Napoleon inspired arch entering the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II on the left of the picture. The Duomo is one of the most magnificent and large traditional places of worship anywhere and is the pride of Milan.
Hope to use the 500D for astro work when the weather allows.
