I have downloaded and have started to use this charting software.

The layout is a bit unusual, but after a while it starts to make sense. I am still modifying and playing with it. There are lots of databases, mostly from Saguaro. Has anyone else had a look?

I've been using it for a while - it is uniquely laid out but I do find it easier that, for example, CdC (Skychart).

I tend to use StarCalc, CNebulaX & Cartes du Ciel in roughly that order.

CNebulaX is an observing planning tool and that is predominately how I've used it. Having said that I have yet to figure out how to effectively search through some of its databases - kind of wish they were merged into one rather than spread-out over several e.g. double stars are spread across a few DBL0A, DBL0B etc. but that is a minor quibble.

I have just tried searching for a few objects, just as a test. According to the HTML handbook on Torres' site, the curiously named Jump combo box in the middle of the toolbox is the best place to search. I printed the handbook out, as there is so much in this program!! I tried common names, eg: Bug Nebula, Ghost of Jupiter, Omega Centauri, all were found on the map. The small icon above the small search window like a purple book with a "R" (reference library) displays a dialog box where extensive searching is available on a list by constellation or type. Simply clicking on any object on the list immediately brings it up on the map screen.

Yes, its a great program but I wish he would include ASCOM telescope control as well as just the damned meade lx200 control.

His HTML handbook on the program indicates that ASCOM control is coming soon, and that the Meade LX one could be used via "emulating interfaces", whatever that means. Might be worth monitoring his website for updates.

Yes, I had emailed him some time ago and asked if ASCOM was on the horizon. He said he was deeply involved with another map series and that he would have a look at it when he had finished. Perhaps if people emailed him and asked for the feature it may urge him along?
