Jupiter + Ganymede Animation - 12th May 2009

On the morning of the 12th May, I had some very good seeing - the best I’ve had all year, and I was able to record some images of Jupiter and Ganymede in very good conditions, allowing surface details (albedo features) to be seen on Ganymede - one of the Galilean Moons of Jupiter, 750 million kilometres away!

Nice job Mike,
Looks great, the regions of differing albedo on Ganymede are a highlight. Obviously the seeing improved over the duration of these captures.

Whats going on in the animation in the gap between Jupiter and Ganymede, did you do a separate RGB alignment just for Ganymede, as there seems to be a vertical edge in there?

Hopefully this is the start of a period of better seeing for Jupiter.

Regarding the gap - yes, I align on Ganymede in a separate run through Registax and then recombine with the Jupiter image in Photoshop. The vertical edge must be where I didn't set the background levels to 0 in all frames! :doh:
I'll see if I can fix it up.


I don't know either, it's catching up on me this afternoon. 2 mornings in a row of getting up at 3:30am and then heading off to work after imaging Jupiter. And it's predicted to be clear all week!

This is about the time when I start wishing for it to get cloudy :)

If the seeing continues to improve, i'll deal with it :)

Would like to be a fly on the wall and see how you do all this. It takes me long enough to do a few coloured avis, let alone doing RGB in each avi, plus the animation.

nice animation, the detail on ganymede is consistent, well done.

i just sold all my planetary gear ( filters, wheel, powermate ), at least i can come and have a squiz at your stuff.
