Photo of telescope without an eyepiece!

I have some money invested with a managed fund and came home last night to see the latest issue of their investment advice magazine. The feature article on the front page was titled "Looking for the star performers" and had a picture of a guy looking at the skies with binoculars and a telescope on a tripod nearby. When I looked at it closely I could see the telescope didn't have an eyepiece in it :doh:I guess that is why they are fund managers and not astronomers.

I remember a number of years ago now they were talking on the news to a person from the fire brigade about house fires and he said "people should turn their appliances off at the power point, otherwise, over time the electricity builds up at the wall and can cause a fire"....I guess that is why firemen put out fires, which is their job, and people with electrical/electronic training do their job.

My wife was working at a local library when one of the public computers had "locked up", so she turned it off and counted to about 8 and turned it back on. One of the other staff said "no, no, no....you have to count to ten before you can turn it on again" :screwy: Just another case of people not understanding something that is not "their job".

I guess we all have lots of stories like this.

lol I received a copy of that magazine too, and also noticed there wasn't an eyepiece in there.

I think they knew more about astronomy than you give them credit for. ;) They were worried about dewing up the eyepiece and so had placed it somewhere warm and under cover until they had located the object in the binos and were ready to slew the scope to the object. :P

The recent performance of most managed funds, investment advisers etc. may cause you to reconsider the 'knowing their area' statement. Their accuracy and overall performance reminds me of the recent astronomy vs astrology thread.:wink2:

Perhaps they knew there was no ep in the scope, because they didn't want to risk seeing the fund savings disappearing off into the distance ;)

I've seen many poor examples of telescopes setup improperly in stock photo libraries, in fact it's rare to see a correctly set up telescope. :( Chances are the magazine got their image from a stock library.

Talking about fake photo set ups. About 11 years ago there was a section on "Beyond 2000" showing the then relatively new goto telescopes. They used a LX200 classic. A dummy two star alignment was done looking out the window at Hadar and Acrux by setting the two alignment stars with the setting circles ( a little off camera). What a surprise I got when the screen said alignment successful. The studio was rather small, in a unit in Balmain but later when I saw the program it was surprisingly realistic.

You know what their logic was?
Astronomers spend all their spare money on astro gear.
Therefore, no astronomers will have money to invest.
Therefore, no astronomers will receive this investment magazine.
They're thinking ... we can get away with not having an eyepiece and no-one will notice!
