M16 & M20 Ha images from last night

Another clear windless night last night prompted me to head out to my observatory at around midnight to do some more Ha imaging.

I particulary wanted to shoot M16 but I also decided to see what M20 would look like ... not normally a hydrogen alpha target ... as you would expect you only get half the object ... the emission ( red ) nebula ... the reflection ( blue ) nebula is disgarded by the Ha filter.
There was a fair bit of Ha in close proximity to M20 that was captured by the 7nm Baader filter... I'm not sure you will be able to see it very well in this web sized image as jpeg compresion tends to wipe it ... it was quite pronounced in PS when processing.

Anyway here are the images.

M16 1 hour 6 minutes total @-18C
M20 55 minutes 4 seconds @-15C

I really don't know .... ;) .... it's all fun and always interesting to do something different ! I really like the subtle detail that can de obtained with Ha imaging so far ... there are some structures I've never seen before or at best were only hinted at in my colour shots :)

Impressive Steve. Quite a different slant on the Triffid. I've never really noticed the loop in the top of M16 in other shots. Can't wait to see more.

I've also heard a rumor that Troy is going to get me to break-in :D his new set of Baader narrow band filters this weekend so hope to be able to post some Ha some time soon :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Cheers Peter ... the loop at the top is hard to bring out in colour images it's considerably fainter than the rest of the neb. Look forward to seeing the results of the NB filters ... Baader are good gear.

I always knew there was more data lurking around in the Eagle when I've shot it in colour before but the Ha filter really brings it out .... thanks Jeanette !

Another Ha ripper Steve. I particularly like the detail and 3D effect in the pillars area of Eagle Nebula.
