Photo Challenge
03-05-2009, 10:42 AM
To encourage more group participation we've decided to go back to our previous image submission method.

The Monthly Photo Challenge will no longer be anonymous so just post your entry here, along with a caption if you like, then at the end of the month I'll run the poll as usual.

As usual we'll have a separate Comments thread so that we don't clutter this thread.

So image submissions only here please, (one image per member).

The topic for May is: "Light and shadow"

So let's see those entries.

:)

Hi all,

I took this one when Anne-Louise was leaving the hospital with Toliman. It is the shadow of Hadar screening the light being diffracted onto the concrete path by the sanded edge of the glass fence panels.

One of our most familiar buildings at night, creating its own shadows.

Walking trails around the coast of Vancouver Island at Ucluelet are dotted with seats in idyllic places to rest or reflect.

;)well not quite up to some of the others but this shot has a bit of mystery about it - light and dark shadows - you never know what is lurking in the shadows..........;)

I just love the long shadow of the palm tree eerily projected across the sand. It contrasts so strongly with the colourful and brightly lit scene. Russ

Hello,

With dull, cloudy skies over Brisbane today, I was driven indoors to interpret this month’s theme – Light and Shadow. So, here is a macro shot of a common kitchen knife, taken with flash to add a little drama. Thanks for looking!

Canon 40D with Canon EF-S 60mm F2.8 Macro lens.
ISO100, 1/60 sec at F8.

Cheers

Here's a shot I love from 2007, taken at Elachbutting Rock, 400 odd Km NE of Perth on an astro trip.

Light streaming in through a thin gap between rocks which forms a 50m long narrow but tall tunnel.

Some benefit from the nasty beggers that cut short one of my very few observing weekends last year.

Not sure of the "rules" of these challenges, ie whether the shot needs to be taken this month. This is the closest I have taken in May that would meet the mandate. I was on the tarmac boarding a plane from Mt Isa when I saw this beautiful sunset. I stopped and took this, much to the annoyance of the ground crew. Shame about the mobile stairs.

Found an interesting subject this month to photograph.
It's a statue dedicated to the Olympic Spirit.

I loved the silhouette against the beautiful backdrop of colour (reminded me of the Olympic colours).

Halls Falls at the Blue Tier Tasmania. I liked the way the light backlit the falls and the dark shadows under the ferns.

Sadly, further up the hill on the blue tier a beautiful area of high conservation native forest is being clearfelled by forestry Tasmania. Forests such as these don't fit the definition of "old growth" as they were selectively logged almost a century ago.
Pioneer loggers took only the largest trees and left almost no sign of their activities.
