Observatory Question.

What is the reasoning with them being Domed shaped ? Why do you never see a square one. (I know it's bit of trivia question, but I am curious like that) :)
If you dont know, just type in the most outrageous reason , why you think they are. :lol:

I guess the dome concept evolved from a simple series of basic elements:

the sky is a dome, 360 degrees in all directions...
therefore...
the telescope within the enclosure will be moving 360 degrees in all directions...
therefore...
the enclosure can be build in a circular shape...
therefore...
the roof can also be built in a circular shape and can move on a circular rail or track...

well, you get the picture. That's my thought process...

I don't know exactly but I would think the answer is more along the lines of reducing air turbulence.

Other than that they are neat looking!

I was looking at more of the historical aspect to how the dome evolved, rather than the home-made roll-off design.

Domes served a particular function, just like the roll-off design does to backyard amateurs. I do not believe either are more superior than the other.

Oh well, if you want to be serious about it...

A dome allows a view to the horizon as well as shelter from the wind.

Another tick in the box for shelter from the elements! And I did not think about the access to the horizon. I guess these days people don't consider the horizon as important, perhaps? Especially with all the popularity on imaging, imaging, imaging, and only seeking their target objects as high in the sky as possible. Just an observation.
