View Full Version here: : First Startrail with my new 1000D
I've been thinking about getting a DSLR for ages and finally took the plunge early this week. This is my first attempt at a Startrail that didn't get clouded out, from my suburban back yard in Melbourne.
I was all set with the laptop and everything for a 2 hour startrail, however the clouds started rolling in again. Still we need the rain.
Comments welcome

Great way to find where the south celestial pole is from your house. How are you find the camera. I bought one about two weeks ago and have been suprised at the how sensitive the camera is to light and how little dark noise there is.

Nice first light. Quite a bit of light pollution there. You could probably adjust the levels to darken the sky a bit.
Also try ISO800 or 400 - the bright stars will still show up.
Nice work.
I'm having a great time with the camera, Yes I was also surpised at how sensitive the camera is, Having never owned a DSLR before.
My next plan is to take the old EQ2 mount out of the garage and try some slightly longer exposures. I know they won't be anyware near as good as a HEQ5 or EQ6 but they have to be better than no tracking at all. I was thinking of photographing Orion Nebulea ec. with the camera lenses, I have 18 - 55 and 75 - 300 so it's a start at least
Mike: How do I go about adjusting the levels, IE do you mean contrast and brightness? Or something else?

Hey
I think levels are the levels adjustment in the colour menu in GIMP (free) and photoshop, although having never used photoshop I can't be exactly sure.
You can adjust the overall histogram or the individual RGB channels!
I have a 1000D too an am very happy with it!
Keep having fun.
