I've been processing an image of ngc2070 from last night and I'm a bit torn between 2 versions ... lighter vs darker background.
I happen to like the lighter version because I think it shows more of the subtle outer lying nebulosity and also some of the dark lanes between the stars but I know people on this forum seem to always like darker backgrounds.
So which do you prefer light or dark ?

By the way this was taken with my FLT110 ofcourse ... 4x600sec plus 4x720sec ... total of 1 hour 28 minutes ... all @ -8C ... it was a warm night here last night at the time I did the imaging.

You should put a poll in!! People love to vote in polls.

For the record I, like Greg, like the darker one better. It's be even better if you knocked a bit of the magenta out, I just find it a bit too pinkish, not enough red and yellow. But maybe that's just me.

Great picture BTW.

Cheers
Stuart

Another vote for the darker image. I like the subtle contrast it produces.

2nd (darker) one - my eye enjoys the contrast more than any extra faint detail that comes through.

Ok all is running true to form so far with the darker being the prefered version ....

Stuart I can't turn this post into a poll unfortunately ... as far as I can tell I'd have to start a new thread ... sorry ... have never done a poll before and didn't realise !

Thanks all for comments so far

Yep, darker one.

Extra contrast makes it more striking.

I played a concert with The Seekers in Tom Price in 1980, played guitar in their backing band, we played at the footy oval from memory.

Ah memories

Thanks Frank !

By the way Steve you may be interested to know Yuri from TEC is planning to make a fluorite triplet 110mm APO. I see you are using a TEC lensed WO FLT110.

I'm voting for the darker one, but my reasons are a secret, and if I told you, well you know how the saying goes ....

the histogram never lies, the darker one has had the black point brought nicely to the edge of the curve, giving maximum contrast without clipping and losing detail.

darker one for me..... just exercising my voting rights there :nerd:

Hi Greg

The lens in my FLT110 is TMB designed ... you may recall we've discussed this before mate ;) ... thanks for telling me anyway and thanks for looking at my image.

p.s. If you ever get tired of your 180mm TEC or your BRC250 for that matter ... I've got no money but I could look after them for you

Thanks all ... 100% darker preference so far. I've already posted it on my google website. By the way I like the darker one as well now ... I said it was a toss up between the two ... it's nice to get other opinions ;)

For the tiniest amount of nebulosity you lose, I think the darker one is far more appealing mate. Dark for me.

Nice one too!
