Has anyone tried those usb to network cable connectors for extending the range of the normal usb cable?

I have used a USB 1.1 device bought on ebay (works on a standard cat5 cable), worked nicely on a webcam.

Not really the same thing but I use VGA to cat5 converter at work and whilst they do the job, you can sometimes get a little bleeding in the image. If you do go this route and it's for imaging, make sure that you use shielded cat 5 cables.

I want to use this to control scope and camera from my shed while i have the scope in the back yard, normal 5m usb extension won't do the job but about 10m of cat5 cable and these usb converters should be good.

I got one of these today and gave it a run this evening. I ran the webcam off a powered hub on the remote end and apart from my RJ45 connectors having broken off locking pins it all went well. I did manage to disconnect the camera a few times.

I've not managed to get the laptop talking to the mount yet so I did not test running two USB devices at a time. I was also using a relatively short cable - 3 meter rather than the possible 60M.

It looks like a great way to manage cabling between the telescope and laptop.
