Had a go at getting a wide field shot of the Milky Way tonight.

This is my first attempt with the 350D tripod mounted, 10-22mm wide field lens, 30 seconds, Av 4.5, ISO 1600, f/l 10mm.

Only adjusted lighting and contrast slightly.

Also got the Pergola Neb in the shot:doh:

Very nice first shot Trever.
This shot would clean up nicely with a bit of tweeking.

Nice camera and lens for widefield imaging.

Cheers

Nice shot.... I'm surprised at how much Milky Way you captured, given an untracked shot.... high ISO..... would be nice to have a tracking mount and do it at ISO 200 or 400 right?? :2thumbs:

Nice stuff, i always get confused here.

Tripod mounted but you are not tracking??? is that right

Any longer and you would get star trails???

Thanks for the comments, the 10-22mm is an extremly wide lens, even with the 1.6x, at 16mm, it takes in a huge angle of view.

I would love to have tracking with this set-up, longer exposure times, no star trails, soon i hope.

Dave, yes it's mounted on a camera tripod no tracking, fixed and set to 30 second exposure, i think:whistle:that with the wider lend and less magnification, you might be able to get longer exposure times without too much trailing on the stars, with say a 300mm lens, the exposure time would be less to avoid trails, i think that's right:confused:

I have way too much light polution here to get anything much better than this, and registax and neatimage just confuse me no end, need to learn these programs.

The clouds are back again, so no more practice tonight:poke:

I also resolved some very fine detail on the power-pole nebula (ngc 240-415V) in the constellation of 'currentus irregulus' with a 6" refractor!

Oh! & here's a pic of the door-frame nebula...(ngc 4X2) in the constellation of woodenus rottenus..

Great work asimov. Do you realise you have discovered a supa-nova in the door-frame nebula?

Well done.

When you get it it is worth getting Roger from BATSC to get rid of the grease and fix the worm drives up to significantly reduce the PE

had a very rough quick go at taking the light pollution out of second shot Trevor - someone else could do much better I would think - I should of isolated moon and not exaggerated that so much - amazing you can take shots like this with a bright moon present!

Thanks Kearn, i need to practice tweaking my pics a bit more.

I had a better look at another pic from tonight and was wrapped to see i had the milky way, lmc and the smc, all in the same frame.

Getting a little better in the second image.....

I took this shot last night west of Melbourne away from the light pollution.

It's amazing how much more i could see compaired to my back yard.

Usual settings mounted on the tripod.

i think i have asked before. your tripod is tracking?? or are you taking a alt/az camera tripod exposure?

i really like that one.

I am liking the shots that have trees and terrestrial objects in them as wel

well done!!

Thanks guys, i am happy with the detail i got in the pics, sure does make a difference away from the lights:)

Dave P, camera is just mounted onto the tripod, and fixed for 30-60 seconds exposure.

Wide angle lens is set in manual mode at 10mm and focus at infinity.

I am just waiting for the EQ6 replacement to get some more shots of this awsome target, and i also like the trees in the pics, it adds some character;)

davidpretorius

ok, i always get star trails if i try and do long exposure shots ie 20 plus seconds with the toucam.

thanks for the picture, nice setup

i will try again tonight with a long exposure

Don't forget Davo that the reason there is very little trail in Trevor's shot is because he is using a wide angle lens, ie. 10mm.
If he used a 200mm for example at the same exposure time then you would see the trailing stars.

:)

Oh I forgot to mention- Very nice shot of the Milky Way Trevor.
I like the trees in the foreground too.
