Well, I made it to my Job Interview! I borrowed next doors Van to get there (I sold it to him to buy my 12" Dob).

I had to 'Prove' a strong interest in Rugby League, evidence of any sport-teaching experience to kids, any evidence of promoting Rugby League, proof of computer literacy, proof of an ability to write reports and anything else to help with the position.

I went fully armed with my '100 competition games award', evidence of my selection into the Australian Rugby Team, evidence of playing in and winning 6 Grand Finals, originals of all the newspaper write-ups, articles I have written for newspapers and RL magazines, proof of the district and clubs I have started, Coaching credentials, emails from other clubs thanking me for helping them, samples of my PC literacy (copies of website pages and heaps of stuff done in Office, Excel etc.) and a BIG smile!

The interview went for half an hour and was with the Victorian head of ARL Development and a lady from the ARL in Sydney.

They asked about a thousand questions often talking over top of each other (which one do I answer first?) and the whole episode was very draining.

They informed me that they had another 12 people to see that day (there was 1 before me) and then they were holding interviews in Sydney the next day, then they would be in France for 3 weeks holding Interviews for RL Development Officers over there as well.

They will inform applicants of the outcome after they get back from France
in about 4-5 weeks time.

I hate the waiting game

I think I did OK, but I know I rattled on because of nerves! I had evidence of experience to fit every requirement they asked for plus I had proof that I have experience in what they teach the new staff!! The training they give is to teach new staff how to hold school clinics, organise competitions and hold a Gala Day. I have already done all these for the ARL! That shocked them!!

I must now wait . . . and wait . . . and wait!

p.s. There are only 3 positions available.

You've done all you can. It's out of your hands now Ken, so you might as well forget about it for now & let events take their course. It sounds like you're about as qualified as they come.

I'd still rather you opened a scope shop in Melbourne. :D :D :D

Yes, I was looking forward to doing that until I found out the up-front cost of stock! Ouch!! The 'Minimum' order from GSO was $60,000.

A little bit different to the old days. I started a Harley Davidson dealership with $26 and built it up from there.

8 more posts to go Ken, so lets talk about why you deserve to have this job,
1. you worked hard for it for many years
2. they were impressed by th size of you scope
3. You have the personality most suited for the position
4. they are mugs if they don't employ you!

ballaratdragons
26-09-2005, 11:04 PM
LOL! They don't know the size of my scope. It might frighten them (and little children).

What do you mean you said "I had evidence of experience to fit every requirement they asked for plus I had proof that I have experience in what they teach the new staff!! The training they give is to teach new staff how to hold school clinics, organise competitions and hold a Gala Day. I have already done all these for the ARL! That shocked them!! "

Good luck Ken!! You sound like you were really well prepared for it!!!

And mentioning the astronomy is a good thing!!! It shows you can 'think outside the box'. I went for a job interview with ANSTO and one of the questions i was asked was what is my greatest achievement besides academically... i couldnt think of anything but mentioned something more of an accomplishment.. having seen the shuttle launches here in australia. It basically got me the job cause i could think outside the box! So even if you don't think something is pertinant to an interview.. it may actually work in your favour and make u stand out from the crowd! :)

Hope you don't have to wait ages to find out! That is the sucky part!!
*crossed fingers*

Laurie, yes I am on skype but having problems with it.

Rowena, yes I do have to wait. Another 4 weeks now until they notify the applicants.

Yeah, I think my age had a lot to do with it, but they didn't say.

The letter from Sydney said:

"Dear Ken,
Your resume, interview and credentials were of a very high standard. Unfortunately you were unsuccessful. Your Interview and presentation were impressive and you should not be deterred by the outcome.
Thank you for the interest, and contribution, you have made in Rugby League and it's growth, it is much appreciated.
Yours Truly
Blah Blah Blah
ARL National Manager"

ballaratdragons
07-11-2005, 10:55 PM
Thanks Mike,

It will be interesting to see who got it as they will have to work alongside of me in recruiting players from within our district. Thats what the job is about. Teaching RL to kids then introducing them to the local league.

Maybe they want me were I am as I do their job for free anyway!!!
