View Full Version here: : Separate sub-forum for Radio Astronomy?

I know from time to time there's been a few threads discussing Radio Astronomy, and there's no particular forum that they really belong at the moment.
A recently new member with a larger interest in Radio Astronomy has asked for a section on Radio Astronomy so that all threads related to radio astronomy can live together.
What do you think?
Enough interest?

IMHO too many forums can make a site cumbersome. However, Radio Astronomy and Spectroscopy are major observational techniques and maybe should have their own sections.

Yep - I agree with Jeff on this - radio and spectroscopy are two disciplines not given any real space here.

Yes, Radio! I want to know how to tune in Jupiter on my SW while everything else is quiet in the solar system!

I think it is a good idea, atleast it is a place people can look that are interested.
When i first log on i always hit "New Posts" so so i can look at all the latest threads no matter where they are posted, then i can just read the one's that interest me, when done i hit "mark All Threads Read" link at the bottom so i never realy know where the threads are listed.

I think it could bring some of the hidden radio astronomers oput of the woodwork.
They could be interested in something like this:P

I agree with Radio Astronomy, but not spectroscopy - if including that, then where do you stop? Eg: Photometry.

Yes, I agree Mike.

I'd say there's some interest in Spectroscopy.

I,ll look but wont participate because you cant voice an opinion about something you dont know about.
Cheers Kev.

I never said there wasn't.
But, I would categories like this:
Instrument Type: Radio Astronomy, Optical Astronomy.
Research/Observation Type: Spectroscopy, photometry, astrometry, occultation timing, minor planet follow-up, etc.
Hence, I say that if you choose spectroscopy, where do you stop.

Would 'Meteor Astronomy' come under this category also ?
Im wondering if this would be best on its own with -Radio Meteor Astronomy as a sub category, as there are other categories as well under Meteor Astr., eg, Observations, Future Events, etc...
Food for thought...

I think there's enough interest - we'll see how it goes.
I'll create the new forum today if I get the time.

meteor astronomy would come under this heading sure.
Jodrell did a podcast a while back on radio astronomy and inc that
def a good way to assist in meteor observations.
Ill def be adding info to the section on that :)

OK point taken.
I have no problem with this.
I guess it would be as interest is indicated by members and they begin to post their interest. I know I have contributed many times to "Spectroscopy", This thread caught my interest and I learnt much from the other contributers. I also have an interest in Radio Astronomy and would surely try out some simple projects if posted, then provide feedback. It would be good, IMHO, if they were collected together, maybe others would gain an interest from such a forum.
Where do you stop? Where the Moderators draw the line. I'm sure that they look at the numbers.
If your into photometry, etc.-than start posting your experiences.

Radio Astronomy is something I would love to attempt and the more information available the better.
Now, how am I going to hide the antennae under the bed?
Thanks

I'll look too, I'm sure I'll learn a lot, starting from a base of zero!

The new forum is now created:
Radio Astronomy and Spectroscopy (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=40)
I've moved a few radio astronomy/spectroscopy threads in there to kick it off.
