I received a dvd copy of a real gem of a movie on Friday: Les parapluies de Cherbourg, The umbrellas of Cherbourg.

Everyone will do themselves a favour by dedicating 1+1/2 hours to watching this truely amazing movie. But for anyone seriously interested in the art of film it really is a must see. And hear: the music is fantastic! It'll stay with you for a long time!

I must declare my bias because I grew up listening to about 15-20 minutes of some of the highlights of the soundtrack of the movie, and I never forgot it; the reason I ordered the DVD and watched the movie in its entirety for the first time Friday night. And it was just wonderful!

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg... :D :( :scared2: :)

Some notes:

The movie is not available in Australia. In fact there is only one region-free version (the first match if you search amazon), which is a poor quality DVD transfer, so a multi-region player is highly desired. (I have a Yamaha player which according to the user's guide is meant to only play local disks, but it is happy with the region 2 PAL version; but most computers can also take anything. Then one can de-regionalise and re-burn using software.)

After reading what seemed like a comprehensive review of all the DVDs available I got the French version from amazon.fr. But I found that some of the audio is distorted so I now also ordered the latest US (Koch) version which is said to have better sound. Hopefully it'll get here soon cos I can hardly wait. This is in NTSC format so no PAL speedup :) but it won't display on older style TVs.
