well I wasn't feeling to crash hot last night so all I got were these morsels and not the whole lot. Sorry.

It was the most difficult item to photograph, the moon just blotted out the whole sky with moonshine. I had to look hard to see the Pleades.

Anyway I know they are not the best, unguided and just had a guess with the bulb setting..............

(edit) forgot to mention that this was taken on a hanamex video tripod, with my little trusty Pentax *istDS with the 50-500 Sigma APO telephoto lens and a 2 times teleconverter on a manual bulb setting with double overhead cam foxtails, well not really

Well done fellow Dave!

well done Houghy

I went outside had a look through binos and could see nothing ...moon had obliterated all signs of any star cluster maybe I gave up too soon

2nd one looks good dave.

I saw it through the finderscope this morning when I was imaging the moon :) Couldn't even see the pleiades visually, the moon was just too bright!

Yeah I've heard Moonshine does make you feel a bit quezzy Houghy, go easy on the stuff next time.

:poke: :drink: :poke:

Great try on those images mate
it was a very difficult frame to image.

What ISO setting? 1600? Did a great job on the second one Houghy.

I was playing around with the images I took on the night and the night prior to the event.
This is a composite of two images.
The moon shot was taken on the night it passed across the pleiades.
The pleiades was taken the night before, so I combined the two.

Still it's not a natural looking shot and Houghy you did very well to capture what you did.

Lovely captures Houghy,

I did try, got some fairly nice shots of the moon but couldn't tease out any of the sisters without over exposing and with the murk in the air it would make the image glow.

I liked the last time we saw it when it was in cresent mode.

I agree Rob, I wished I had a mount to guide with back then because you could have gotten a 6-10 second expsure for the Pleades and a 1 second one for the cres moon and did what RB did. With friday mornings one it was just far too bright.

Houghy looking at the sat info,

The jetstream looks like it will be clear down the east coast, plus there isn't much low flying nebula either could be good for a Mars imaging session.

I like the 2nd one best Hough - you can see quite a bit of detail near the terminator on the moon. Good work.

One thing I noticed, you only had it set for ISO200 - you might want to bump it to 800 or 1600 next time: You'll get a slightly grainer shot, but you get a loooooooooot faster shutter speed, which will cut down on the trails.

Maybe you can talk Ice into doin' some of his PhotoShop magic on it :poke:

I don't know about that RapidEye,
I tried @ 1600 ISO and got the moon but no stars.
I wanted to achieve exactly what you just suggested, but no success.

I think Houghy got the ISO right, it's just that the moon was way too full to expose any stars properly.

quite correct RB, a higher iso would have resulted in no stars becausethe moon would expose heaps quicker. If I had it on a mount i would have even changed the f ratio a bit too.

Hmmm sounds counter-intuative...
You are correct that going with a faster ISO will expose the moon faster, but it will also expose the stars faster as well. You might not have seen them because they didn't trail enough at the faster shutter speed.

Different cameras respond to ISO settings differently - give it a whirl at ISO 400 or 800 if 1600 didn't work well.
