What album are you listening to this week?
For me its
Janis Joplin - "Pearl"
I've been giving this album a bit of a caning over the last 2 days.
The lyrics are so raw and her voice, wow, her voice.

Hi JJJ,
This week I seem to be stuck on two albums:
The Mathematicians Air Display -- Pekka Pohjola
Brain Salad Surgery -- Emerson Lake & Palmer.
The latter in particular I'm finding simply irresistable (I know, I know -- wrong Palmer) . The 2nd track Toccata is extremely intense, complex music and stands repeated plays well as does Karn Evil.
Best,

JJJ, love Janice Joplin, what a shame she died so young.
Les, that reminds me of Emmerson Lake & Palmers Pictures at an Exhibition, one of my favourites. Pictures at an Exhibition is a classical piece by Mussorgsky and Emmerson Lake and Palmer really do it justice. I've got the album on Vinyl but really need to source a CD as I have easy way of playing Vinyl.
One album I seem to play a lot in the car is a compilation CD that came with the "This is it folks, over the Top" DVD by the Angels, their music certainly stands the test of time.
At the moment it's "Head Injuries" by Midnight Oil.
Hi Les, Phil thanks for reminding me about ELP, I haven't played them for ages. I'll have to dust of the vinyl and have a listen.
Cheers

I have been giving the new JJJ hottest 100 a hammering, also been
enjoying Kings Of Leons new album, and in the metal department
Metallicas new death magnetic gets the thumbs up, i play it flat out
then put it away for a month or so then i start all over again so it must
be good, i like all music though new & old which is a big bonus cos there
is always a concert on that i could turn out and enjoy..

I seen Midnight Oil live at sound relief we were right up against the stage they were definatly a big highlight of the whole show
i don't think there was a person sitting down when they came on, the
minister rocked the house...

I'm so jealous Stuart.:P
Haven't been to a concert for years.
The first time I saw Midnight Oil was at the Homestead Hotel in Brissie. They'd just released their first album. Awesome:D.
The pub circuit during the early 80's was THE place to be to hear great music. The Divinyls one week, Rose Tatoo the next, The Angels, Mental as Anything, Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons etc etc.
I remember seeing Skyhooks, Split Enz & Renee Geyer in one night at the Uni bar, all for the princely sum of $7:eyepop:

Can't beat the aussie music hey, splt endz and hunters were also great, just thinking that would have been awesome as if Rose tatoo and mental as anything came along, even Icehouse who played at the SCG were great via the MCG bigscreens, my older teenage sisters in the mid 80's used to flog Icehouse songs over and over when i was little so everytime i hear them play it brings a good memory,(The world would sure be ordinary without music huh)... :)

Nettie,
great thread :)
Kings of Leon's latest.
I told the young dudes at work 5 years ago this band will go places.
There was something I liked about the sound.
They all remind me of that comment now :)
They supported U2 through Europe and North America I think
on the last tour. No small thing.
Us in Oz got bloody Kanye West as the support...ripped off ! :)

If you happen to be in to blues and like well recorded live music you can't beat John Mayall's 70th birthday concert on DVD. The recording quality is amazing, if you have a home theatre setup and a decent subwoofer I suggest you tie everything down before inserting the disk....
I agree Phil, I have that DVD. sheer musical brilliance.

One I've just listened to (again) Green Day's brilliant CD "American Idiot" (2004)
( Even got the vid of the title song.** )
** The other, which I always play after the original track, is of course the parody by Weird Al Yankovic's "Canadian Idiot." The Weird Al version is good, but his lyrics placed over the Green Day vid is absolutely classic.

Hey jjj,:)
I copy my cd's and customise song titles from several albums onto one cd. That way I had all the favourites on a few cd's.
It kind of kicked off a sub-career as a D J. I attended a 21st party and no one would dance to the music that the host had. She appealed to me for help. I had some customised cassettes in the car that I liked to listen to.
When these went on the player the dance floor was crowded.:)
Consequently I was asked to supply music at ensuing parties. I recieved enumeration ofcourse.
Eventually I was asked to D J at larger venues, sports clubs etc. :eyepop:I stopped it there. It was taking other D J's jobs and I was already fully employed.
But tailoring your own cd's is the way to go jjj. Just your own preferences on the one cd.;)
Cheers Marty

Hi JJJ, Ric & All,
Ditto. My first taste too and has stayed with me a while. GTK played a lot of stuff like Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa and the Mothers & Deep Purple etc plus the Australian bands at the time like Daddy Cool, Aztecs, Lobby Lloyd etc, Brian Cadd.
Apart from Bandstand (which was a completely different sort of show) it is the only rock-music film clip show that was in Black & White that I remember.
Yes, then there was Good 'ol Donny Sutherland (he might have started in B&W now I think of it), Countdown to come. Another one I remember (but can't remember the name of it) was on Channel 10 Sydney weekday afternoons and ran for a 1/2 hr in the mid-70s. It was somewhat more "pop music" oriented and did a lot of Bee Gees etc. What I do remember most about this show was the hostess -- a young lady named Kobe Steele and she had substantial ... attributes
Ahhh, memories ...
Best,
Les D

The actual name of the show was "Right On", and it was shown at 3.30pm during the weekend. Lobe began this program in 1977, and she finished the program in May or June 1978, to disappear into oblivion. Pity. She really did have a big future in front of her!

My favourite music right now is whatever is on Jazz Track at the moment - Bill Frizell's trio I think.
Recently I've given Jethro Tull a bit of a workout, particularly some of the 'lesser' (relatively speaking) albums like War Child, Under Wraps and A. Catfish Rising was a pleasant surprise. Also the new 'Charlie Haden Family and Friends' and the old Pretender 'Isle of View'. I listen to a lot of Arvo Part late at night.
BTW there has been a lot of comments about great ozzie music of the 70s but no one mentioned Chain. Towards the Blues is a great album.

Dang! I was just about to write that you inspired me to listen to this album, but I've realised I'm playing the Friday Night at the Blackhawk. Still, there's no such thing as a bad Miles Davis album. Liz,
Let me know how you go -- happy to share.
There's an assortment of progressive rock/metal (think, 30-minute long drawn out complex arrangements that take you places that your average 3-minute radio pop track would never venture to), as well as some amazing electronic music, which is perfect for a sunny Sunday morning; etherael and uplifting.

Wilco - sweet. I was listening to Sky Blue Sky while driving last weekend. It's a bit... erm... smooth compared to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or A Ghost is Born but a good album nonetheless.
I listened to a bunch of new albums on that drive that I liked a lot:
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone (those who like Wilco might like Neko, she's country in the same way Wilco are, and just as smart)
Bon Iver - Blood Bank
F****ed Up (yes that is their name) - The Chemistry of Common Life
Antony and the Johnson - The Crying Light

Strangelings this week
http://www.sugarman.org/index.html
I caught him late early 80s maybe late 70s.. cut an album stateside never did anything .. few years later it starts going crazy down our side of the pond .. tours and fills venues the same size of many big names mentioned above.. goes home and gets a day job .. never even plays a gig in his home country.
And http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Hawkins
Another who despite being locked up for a considerable part of his life.. sitting on a milk crate down venice beach belting out a few songs on there jail issue guitar gets noticed and shared with the masses.
