What price, I wonder???
Oh dear, and I was moments away from clicking 'purchase' on a 50D body.
List Price (body only) US$799 according to dpreview (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0903/09032504canoneos500d.asp)
Straight US-AUS conversion as of the exchange rate right now
= $1150...that's without other costs added on top (shipping etc).
Very attractive, and you'd expect will have an impact on the price of the 50D.

Looks nice, but I wouldn't pick it over the 50D. The one problem I've had with my 350D, which has taken my photography capabilities down significantly from film days, is the viewfinder image size. My 350D is 0.8x mag, this 500D is 0.87x, where as the 50D and old film cameras I used are 0.95x. I will never buy another camera with a view finder smaller than 0.9x, it's just too hard to manually focus and get a feel for the image. It's like looking down a drain pipe plossle.
My 2c worth :)
Nor I...to be honest.
I'm also not interested in being able to capture videos with my DSLR....and I wouldn't trade of the fps capability of the 40D or 50D.
But it's an interesting camera and its features probably represent good value for money, which I'm hopeful will push the price of the 50D down a little.:)

Don't you use live view for focusing? Use it once and you'll never use the viewfinder again. Or use a laptop and download the focus images just like you were using a dedicated CCD camera.
I think live preview was standard since the 40D.
ISO12800 sounds wild. I wonder if its useful or just full of noise for astroimaging.
Greg.
Not for terrestrial...unless I'm doing macro or want to use the grid lines for composition purposes.
I find I have to recharge the battery far more often if I use Liveview too much.
The heightened ISO does sound good, but as you say at what expense in terms of noise?
Still...a very nice camera....but I'll stick to the 40D for now.:)

I have a 40D as well. Beautiful camera. I haven't used the live preview hardly at all so I agree with you for terrestial. For astroimaging I used
Images Plus and its focus routine and a laptop. I think that gets exact focus every time.
Greg.
Yes indeed, I'm not 100% sure why (exchange rate or because of the 500D news) but the price of the 50D is falling, the 50D hasn't moved all that much since release but over the past week or so its starting to come down in $$$.
I'm going to Japan in around 10 days from now, and it looks like the 50D may just have to end up in my camera bag before I go.
