I'm hoping to take posession of a new Losmandy G-11 in a few weeks time and I'm considering getting the precision worm and gears sent over with it. Does anyone have experience with the precision gear upgrade and is it worth it and easy to install?

Paul,

If its new then it allready has the precision worms and gears. Scott Losmandy has been using precision worms and gears for last 2 years....

Best Regards
Chris

Whew, thansk for that Chris. That's a relief. Have you had any experience with the G-11 before precision worms and after and if so what was the improvement like? I may be interested in getting a set to fit out my GM-8 if I decide to keep it as well (That's if they fit the 8).

Best regards
Chris

You obviously didn't read this thread Robby. :D http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=3818

Why get a gemini when I have a Starmate and Argonavis :P:D Though I did think about it to run goto from my laptop, but then I'd probably need to get a more powerful laptop more cabling yadda yadda :P

Your a lucky man Paul...
Yes you don't need Gemini with AN. Especially with the price of Gemini!.. There are much better options. We must get you star-mate controlling the AN at some point. I have it working here nicely, and am about to send a sample to Gary at Wildcard for him to try.
Cheers

Now all I need is another camera and I can set the 8 up with the Orion and 4" celestron refractor as guidescope side by side mounted and the meade and a guidescope over/under setup on the 11. I'm turning into an astrophotography junkie. All I need now is a night that doesn't have clouds or a full moon  Atm I'm dreaming, I've hardly been out in a month. Starting to suffer withdrawls. I'll need all this gear soon. The mapleton observatory have asked me to start running 10 week beginner astrophotography courses after xmas. Man will I have to do some cramming.

Hey guys,

I've been drualing over the idea of a C9.25+ED80 on a G11... and I don't have a wife! ;)

One question: Do you absolutely need Gemini for Goto or is it possible to use a laptop + serial cable for goto? If the latter is possble, then how does the software compare in goto/tracking accuracy to Gemini?

I don't use the Gemini with the GM-8 nor will I at this stage with the G-11. I like using the Argo Narvis. The only goto I have any sort of experience with on a G-11 uses the Gemini. I'm sure there are other alternatives.

Robby,

Your Starmate system looks way cool! Can it be used with a PC laptop through the ST4 port of the G11 for GOTO or is that port only for guiding? I'm considering a G11 and trying to find a way to avoid paying extra for the Gemini but still get Goto (using a laptop?)... What alternatives are there?

Cheers,
Nuri

You need Gemini to get Goto on G-11. The other PC-controlled option is WinCTC.
Yes you could use the star-mate as Goto, but you'd still need to add encoders. But even then the Goto will be horendeously slow with the standard motors, and a waste of time....
Short answer to save you hassles is that if you want Goto on Losmandy then the only real option is Gemini.
Personally I use ArgoNavis + Palm Planetarium interface. Not goto, but push-to. Just as good!
Cheers

I'd love to see a G11/Gemini in action. Does anyone in the Sydney (and vicinity) have one that I could l see working at a viewing night? Any of the guys who meet at Kulnura for example?

Thanks,
Nuri
