Setting up stellarium

Can some one please give me step by step instructions for adding your location to the program, when ever i do, it just goes default or something i can't add my town name or anything i must be doing in the wrong order.

Press F6

Select the location from the presets or work out the your lat and long and type it in. Type in your location. Click on add to list. your hom town should now be saved.
Once it has been entered and you have selected it, check the box in the left hand corner use as default. This should work.

Hi Shaun,

I don't know what version of Stellarium you're using but the following works for 0.10.0 beta:

1. Click on the Location icon (top icon) on the left hand side side of the screen. This will bring up a window with a map of the world and a lot of cities listed on the right hand side.

2. Click on the map roughly where Kellerberrin is in WA. This will change the Name/City: field to New location.

3. Replace New location with Kellerberrin.

4. Select Ausrtalia in the Country field.

Your Lat. and Long. were taken from your Profile. (Your Profile doesn't show seconds)

5. Change the Latitude: field to S 31° 37'

6. Change the Longitude: field to E 117° 42'

7. If you know your Altitude, change the Altitude: field to show your Altitude in meters.

8. Click on the Use as default box.

9. Click on the Add to list button to save your new location.

10. And lastly! Enjoy using Stellarium. :)

Note: If you make a mistake or need to edit your location settings, it is better to delete your location and start again.

I was able to give you a step by step instruction because I changed my own settings from the local airport to my exact location as I typed the instructions above.

Hi Shaun

A lot have had trouble with locations in Stellarium, Particularly 0.10.0 beta which is now obsolete. The beta release had some problems in this area. Try to get the 0.10.2 release which has fixed most of the bugs.

The instructions given by Henry are OK if you can follow them.

If you still have trouble copy this file into the area of your config.ini file, normally \documents and settings\[yourname]\applications data\ stellarium\
into a new folder named data.
file name "user_locations.txt
Beaumont Hills Australia ; 2270 33.696S 150.959E 60 2 Earth

A sample file is attached
Substitute your town and Coords etc
It will then appear in your cities listing.

altitude (in metres)
[what is "2"]

Here is the format of the user_locations.txt it also suffices for the base_locations.txt

Locations file.
This file is used to create the location list as used in the location selection dialog.
Format:
One record per line
Fields in a record are delimited with the tab character
Line beginning with a # character are comments
Field are as follows:
1 LocationName, Provice/State (supports spaces)
2 Country(ISO Code/Full English Name) (supports spaces)
3 Type code (C/B=Capital, R=Regional capital,N=Normal city,
O=Observatory, L=lander, I=spacecraft impact , A=spacecraft crash
4 Population (thousand)
5 Latitude (deg[N/S]) in decimals
6 Longitude (deg[E/W]) in decimals
7 Altitude (meters)
8 Light Pollution (0-9 Bortle scale, empty=auto)
9 TimeZone (empty=auto)
10 Planet (empty=Earth)
11 LandscapeKey (empty=auto)

This information is in the header of the *_locations.txt header.
