now if i remember correctly Jen :confuse3:

there is a rule of thumb that you should have at least 10% free space on your hard drive

start by doing a disc cleanup - then delete more files if you have to - and see how you go from there

1. Shut down computer and unplug it from the mains. Wait at least a minute and then plug it back in.
This works most of times but you really have to unplug it and wait a min. Just shutting down is not enough.

2. Try running a hard drive scan in safe mode (open my computer, right click on c: drive, select properties, then tools and then select error checking).

More drastic measures:
1. Boot windows installation disk and select automatic repair. Be prepared to have to install some software again.
2. Back up everything and do a clean windows install.

Also, unrelated to your problem, make sure you have at least several gigs of free disk space or windows will slow down heaps. Defragmenting the drive will also help.

Hi Jen

I had that happen to me last week when I tried to update a video driver. I tried for hours to get it right. Ended up putting a disk image back on. But later I tried something else and I think that if I had turned the computer off at th mains and waited 10 minutes all would have been OK.

Any luck Jen?

I had major problems with my PC couple of months ago - kept freezing, shutting down, blue screens :scared: etc .... tried many things ... ended up being some well hidden trojans deep in my system. Ran all my virus scans, and finally bought Spydoctor - ran a deep scan and voila - a little nasty lurking ....... all OK one the nasty was eliminated ........ huge relief.
May or maynot be your problem

Hi,

The fact you can still boot up and got online in safe mode tells me that it maybe a driver issue, you say you have tried restore and that did not help.

More than likely it could be DVD or video related, if you are willing to try give this a go.

1) Shut down pc and unplug from wall
2) Take cover off the pc
3) Unplug the 2 cables going to the dvd player (the one with 3 wires is the power the other might be skinny red one or a wide flat grey one) if it is the grey flat one look for a red stripe down one side and remember the side that was on so you can put it back the same way when needed.
4) Plug pc back in wall and try to start normaly or select last known good configuration.

If this fails go to second option

Second Option

Start pc in safe mode right click "My Computer" select "Properties" select "Hardware" then select "Device Manager"

Expand the list under "Display adapters" right click your adapter and select "Uninstall" when done reboot the pc.
If there was a problem with drivers this should reinstall the driver once rebooted.

Jen, my suggestion is to get another HDD, currently you can buy around 500gb for $100 or so. Do a fresh install of XP. Put your old HDD as a secondary leaving the files intact. You should be able to easily find a copy of XP, if you have a serial sticker on the side or back of your PC that's all you need apart from a copied install disk.

If all the above sounds too daunting, find a local IISer with the necessary skills to assist (perhaps a wanted ad in the icetrade section )

Jen,

Before you get carried away re-installing etc, make a backup of everything (if you don't have a recent backup already, you're asking for trouble).

A second hard drive is a good idea. Cheap, easy, and given the vintage of your system, quite possibly a good idea to get a new hard drive anyway.

I work off a strategy of multiple hard drives. One for Windows/applications, one for all my "data". If Windows has a complete breakdown, I lose nothing I can't just re-install. Might be overkill, but this process has saved me at least twice in the last few years, and as recently as November last year when I dropped the windows/boot hard drive when I was putting it in a new computer.

If you can manage it, an INTERNAL drive is a good way to go because it will not require any drivers. An external hard drive is a little more expensive (it's the same type of hard drive just with a power supply and an interface to USB), but it will require drivers on XP (maybe) and will probably be a headache.

I concur that the problem is probably driver related. Video is normally a pretty good culprit too. After you've backed up everything from safe mode, then the un-install advice given so far is good.

ps. Swan Hill is just a little bit too far for me to come and help - if you were a bit more local I'd be there!

Hi Jen, I am I.T tech by trade so i might be able to help:thumbsup:

"80gig hard drive which is totally full have over 9000 songs on there
512mega bytes RAM i have about 300mb of memory left on there"

RAM memory is random access memory so it doesn't actually store data onto it permanently.I think you mean to say you have 300mb left on your 80GB hard drive.
If thats the case, your hard drive is very full and will cause system instability.

Here is a few things i would suggest you do.
1) Remove any unneeded junk on the computer - you want to have at least 1-2GB free. Then run a DEFRAG on your local disk.

2) Go to "My Computer" and Right click on your Local Disk Drive (C:\) Choose "Properties" and then on the top Tab choose "TOOLS" . Then under "Error checking" click on "Check Now".

This can take some time , sometimes a hr or more. This tool will check your system files and the local disk to ensure it is erorr free, if errors are founded the tool will fix it.

I am quite sure this will fix your problem.

3 When you say it keeps restarting, from which point does it keep restarting? When you choose SAFE Mode, there should be a option to start windows in its last known good configuration.

Let me know how you go with the above.

Cheers,
Ash:)

Hi Jen,
Is your computer an ACER? If it is and you're running AVG antivirus there may be a conflict - this happened to me at work. All Acer PCs with AVG installed would restart and shut-down repeatedly, never booting up. The IT guy came and fixed it - said it was something to do with an update or such!!??. Let me know if that sounds possible and I'll find out what he did.

Sounds like you might need to get someone to take a look at it.

There's also an option where you're selecting safe mode, to boot normaly and generate a log file. If you're lucky, the last entry into this log file when the system resets itself will be the culprit.

Is there an error message when it reboots?

When you're in safe mode, turn off 'auto reboot on blue screen' by doing the following:

Start Buttom --> Control Panel --> System --> Advanced tab --> In the 'Startup and Recovery' section, click 'Settings' button --> Under 'System Failure' section, untick 'Automatically Restart' -- Click OK twice to get out of the System area of Control panel.

Now reboot into normal mode and if you see a blue screen with white writing, write everything down (you can ignore the hex, stuff that looks like 0x6A 0x7B etc) and post here.

Very likely flaky hardware or a driver issue.

Hi Ash thanks for the tips but it wont let me do that in safe mode  its telling me it needs to access all windows files to do that :screwy:
When i turn my computer on it it looks great to start with then while the blue thing is loading up going across the screen it decides to shut down and reboot over and over again thats as far as i get so i used the F8 button to its last known good configuration but that didnt do a thing  safe mode is all i can do. So i dont get any errors pop up or anything like that.

So far i have unplugged it from the wall
Gave it a good clean up have about 1.3 gig free on my C drive and 5.2 on my D drive
Disabled my drivers (to scared to uninstall:lol:) would this make a difference if i did :)
Done a virus scan
And a computer scan using Advanced System Care

Jen do you have the motherboard driver disk for the computer ?
You could install all the motherboard drivers again from the disk in Safe Mode then try boot up in normal mode.

Also, have you tried booting using Last Good Known Configuration ?
When the computer boots, hit the F8 key before Windows loading screen usually appears(right after boot starts showing the POST screen - white text on black); then select Last good Known Configuration.

This is an explanation of the error. It is from a Microsoft page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms793442.aspx):

My suggestion would be to boot into safe mode, and delete your drivers. You can do it 1 by 1 until you eventually replace the driver that is causing the error, or you can do several per boot to save time. It will mean some work as you will have to download and replace the drivers, or track down your hardware's driver CD-ROM's.

Shaun

Hi Jen I'm pretty sure I know exactly what happened to you computer and I know how to fix it and make sure that it never happens again.
You say that you have 9000 songs on there, so ,

Step 1: In you song library search for Billy Ray Cyrus.

Step2: Delete all Billy Ray Cyrus songs Especially Achy Breaky Heart.

Step 3: Restart computer and all will be restored and running better than ever. ;)

BTW, good to hear you got it sorted. ;)

Yeah but that's a generic fix that works for a LOT of things ;P

One other useful trick I've discovered while researching this issue:

Step 1: Place your telescope next to your computer.
Step 2: Go through your computer and find all songs by Pink that were placed there by your MOTAS.
Step 3: Delete all tracks found in step 2.

After deleting the two Pink albums my evil GF had surreptiously placed on my PC I was astounded to find my scope gained TWO WHOLE INCHES of aperture!

AVG is usually associated with a anti virus program

have you deleted the folder where it resides

also remove it from your start up file directory as it probably loads automatically when you boot up

another option is to go into task manager and close this process then try and delete it

or rename it then try and delete it

or if all else fails buy me and air ticket and I come over and fix it for you free

AstralTraveller
25-04-2009, 09:56 AM
I don't know whether deleting this file is a good idea but I know how to do it - though the procedure is a bit long winded. You go to this page and download the iso image and burn it to cd.

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from cd before the hard disc. Boot to the cd. Choose the 'try Ubuntu' option and it will run from the cd without changing you hard disc. On your desktop you should see two icons representing you c: and d: partitions. Double clicking will open a windows-like file browser. Do whatever you like to your file system. Close ubuntu, remove the cd and reboot.

Alternatively you could do what I did a few years ago and choose the 'instal' option and you'll never look back. If you do want to go this way get back to me and I'll give you a few little hints to make the transition easier.

It's probably a Netcomm NB5 right? Known issue. Netcomm Australia were unaware of the issue, despite it being publically known, until I made them aware of it. Because the Netcomm NB5 uses a Linux distibution named "busybox", it has WGET installed by default. At least on earlier versions. The bot that attacks these modems uses wget to download a compromised binary to the modem, unpacks it and that does the bit. In order to tell if your Netcomm NB5 modem is affected, see if you can telnet to it. Unless you've turned telnet off in the modem config, or changed the username/password, you should, by default, be able to telnet to the modem with the username/password admin/admin. If it won't let you, reboot the modem. If you can telnet to it after that, your modem was infected. To fix it, simply change the default password to something other than admin, and upgrade the firmware (http://www.netcomm.com.au/support).

I work in the industry ;-)

Thats the sad part... I went to bed Monday night with Emule running downloading an episode of Chuck and woke up Tuesday morning to find my internet connection down. I could cop it sweet if I was downloading porn or something:D

Jen,

The first thing I always recommend in this type of scenario is to remove every other piece of hardware other than the mouse and keyboard. That simplifies things tremendously. After doing so, then try and boot into Windows in normal mode. Windows will only load drivers as it needs them. If it works, add your hardware back one by one, rebooting at each turn, until you find the culprit.

One other thought - in safe mode, uninstall all 3rd party applications. Try rebooting into normal Windows mode. Reinstall them one by one, rebooting as appropriate to see what happens.

This could be other problems as well - disk space, virus. You really do need to start clearing space.

Viruses - can be very hard to find, but as a rule, you can check a few places in the registry where many of them like to hide by default.

It could also be a corruption with Windows, and a emergency repair reinstall would probably fix that as well. If you cannot get into safe mode, then you have some serious issues.

I always recommend having some memory sticks, they're dirt cheap these days and can help retrieve important data in safe mode. Typically, DVD/CD burners won't work in safe mode, that's the whole idea - it turns off all 3rd party drivers other than core Windows stuff.

If you were near, I'd have a look at it for you, but alas. Don't do anything drastic like formatting. In the hands of a beginner, you're more likely to screw something up and lose data. The same applies to the registry as well.

I've worked in the support industry for a good number of years now btw. I'm pretty much fluent in Windows, OS X and Linux, with some BSD (freeBSD, openBSD) & UNIX (Solaris 8 & 10) experience thrown in for good measure.

Nup wasn't a NB5. A 2wire 2071A. I did a bit of research and found that it was a recent virus. A friend who is a System admin had a client with the exact same problem the day after I got it. He tracked it down and it can be cured by a firmware update or reset apparently. One of the strangest problems I have come across. My initial thought was virus, but then the fact I could access some sites (google, gmail etc) made me think something else was awry. In the end my initial feeling was right. Still it was a weird one.:screwy:

Might still be the same thing, by all accounts, Netcomm NB5 modems aren't the only ones affected, although I haven't got a definitive list of other modems...

Tis good that it's all fixed.
