I was having trouble with my computer so I called Richard, the 11 year old next door whose bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked him to come over.

Richard clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.

As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong?'

He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.'

I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, 'An, ID ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.'

Richard grin ned. 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?'

'No,' I replied.

'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.'

So I wrote down: I D 1 0 T

(Problem exists between keyboard and chair..)

Haha, must remember that one.
As I was reading I thought the 'Ten T' was going to be ten thumbs.

Blooming 11 year olds, they think they know it all.

Problem is that they do.

As someone who does a lot of puter fixes, ID10T errors are fairly common.

Never been game to tell the customer though, diplomacy is best.

Hi

This may be a little off the subject but I spent my working life in electronic repairing and I saw some prime examples of equipment being put out of action by simple faults that became catastrophes.

The two best were these.
Syptom: Could not tune the aerial! ( I guessed what was wrong but ----)
When I got there the transmiter was literally in pieces on the floor. I spent all day putting it back together. I did fix a few minor faults probably induced in the disassembly. When I got the equipment all back together I turned it on and tested it. Yes the aerial tuner still had the same problem.

I went to the Main distribution fuse board and replaced the "C" phase fuse. The problem was fixed.

The second was just the syptom: The radio has stopped working (Marine RT on a Game fishing Boat. I believe the boat was part owned by Lee Marvin who I met on a later job).

The boat was at Lizard Island so we had to charter a plane to get there.
I fixed the fault in a few minutes. Yes a blown fuse again. Too late to return to Cairns in the dark so we stayed the night on the mother ship, boy what a feast! and returned the next day. The whole exercise must have cost twice the value of the Radio transceiver.

A company I worked for provided computer-based-training packages for the agricultural sector.

I received a very angry call from a farmer complaining that the provided disk wouldn't run.

During the extended call I happened to ask "what does the screen say?

Answer: what screen?

Turns out he thought he'd do the training whilst cultivating, and had loaded it into the stereo on his tractor.

Haha, thats along the lines of the old worn-out story about the tech helpline guy who gets a call about a faulty cup holder on their PC.
The tech guy asks, "what cup holder?"
The owner replies, "You know... you push the button and it slides out."

My favourite is a sticker on a computer where I work, it is the usual silver sticker with the blue circle that says, "Intel Inside" and just under the blue circle it says "Idiot outside".
