How many people here are from Scotland?

I keep reading the word Scotland a lot on this forum, and was wondering howmany Scotts were on here.

I'm one, I come from Glasgow. Lived in OZ of 13 years now.

I am from Glasgow, Southside to be exact, a charming wee hamlet called "Govan", lived in Southside until i was around 26, Govanhill, Toryglen (hance the name) and then out near Loch Lommond, in Lennoxtown

Spent a brief spell working in the USA, then lived near Bristol for around 8 years, before meeting a charming Aussie girl, and moved out here 2 years ago, when i was 36.

Born in Dumfries (advice to travellers: "over the border, turn left, you're there"). Arrived in paradise, sorry, Oz, in Dec 1974, chasing an Aussie girl I met in London.

Been back a few times, mainly to London where my father lives (he's English) but managed to visit friends in Lewis in Outer Hebrides on my 2008 trip

P.S. I don't speak Gaelic!

Well I am a dinky di Ozzi but I did have the "pleasure" of living in the outer suburbs of Glasgow, Houston for 2 1/2 years. I commuted to Greenock every day to work and played golf nearly every day at Lochwinnoch. I just loved it mainly because I was living on expenses that were more than adeqate .

I was born in England but whenever we flew, mainly within Europe, I used to cringe whenever the airlines addressed those travellers “carrying an English passport”. Invariably a (mostly diplomatic) Scottish traveler corrected their terminology!:whistle:

Eventually they got it right and began to use the term UK passport.:lol:

Greenock has changed since I worked there. The shipyard disappeared many years ago and has been replaced by a park.

I lived at the Tontine Hotel for 10 weeks in two suites at 320 pounds/week when the average weekly pay for the locals was around 45 pounds/week.

I did not spend much time at Greenock other than working at the shipyard.

Looks like I'm the sole representative of the "cultured" side of Scotland on here ;) (so far)Originally from Gorebridge in Midlothian (a wee miners laddie), came to Aus in 1981 aged 35, been back once, in '92. Best idea I ever had to come here, but still have fond memories of the old country.

you came here about the same age as me ... how did you find it? i only ask as, as much as i like it here, i am finding it very hard to adjust.

Didn't find it too hard as I remember. Think the lifestyle suited me from the beginning. My accent gave Aussies a bit of trouble as i remember (still does, especially with youngsters). But I've always been in travelling jobs so got used to different places fairly quickly. Just go with the flow :)

Family on my fathers side come from near Kilmarnock. Have cousins who run a dairy fam near there. Stayed with them for 6 weeks one summer when I was about 7, still have wonderful memories of that time (1970). Went back and visited in '96 which was very nice, still couldn't understand what anyone was saying!

Not exactly, but my grandmother was from Unst (Shetland)... went there many years ago and visited the remains of the croft where she lived as a lass. What an amazingly treeless windy peaty beautiful and spirit lifting place.

Australia is such a beautiful country and so much to do. For astronomy I think we are blessed as you know in the UK you were lucky to get out doing astronomy a couple of times every 3 months. J

I'm 6th generation aussie.
My ancestors immigrated hear in the 1860's from the "Orkneys" into Melbourne on the ship "Ticonderoga".
Have only seen photos etc of the Islands and would love to go there one day.
Technically not of Scot heritage, scandanavian by name but who can really tell after a 1000 years

From Alloa, Clackmannanshire ( smallest county with the longest name!), educated Falkirk/ Strathclyde Uni, left in 1970, travelled the world but ended up in Melbourne on the 28th Jan 1978.
I used to say " Scot's by birth; Ozzie by choice."
( Started the CAS; Clackmannanshire Astronomical Society way back in 1966 - those were the days!)

Oh man I just wrote a hole long post and lost it... AAARRRGGHH!!!

I'm from Carntyne near Park head. I met an ozzie girl whilst living in Germany. That was 12 years ago and I've never looked back. Everytime I go home and get an ice cream head ache because the rain is so cold I thank my lucky stars.

Doug, I've lived in Africa for 10 years Germany for two years and Oz for Twelve and haven’t lost my accent either. It's softer and slower now but still there.
