This coming Saturday night will mark the official start of Night Racing at Corbould Park, the local equine race track. Based on recent practice runs they've had the sky glow they produce will effectively blot out my western sky for anything but bright star/planetary onserving.

Being only 2km's away I did a recce - I don't know how many watts those big round lights use, but there's approximately 2 dozen towers with 16 lights on each - 400 odd floodlights!!! Any clouds in that direction when the lights are running take on a powerful luminous glow, which just goes to show how much light is being thrown skywards, and all for nothing!

Obviously I'm going to try and fight this blatant waste of power and light but I fear the damage is done - the poles are up and the lights are already in place. I can only hope that they find the power bill crippling and come to their senses, at least enough to look at alternative options.

Wish me luck.

Good luck with them Steve, I hope as you say they see the power bill to paying patrons ratio and find out there ripping themselves off.

Why cant some of these people with lights on high poles maybe think about putting reflector plates on top the poles?.....cause its such a waste of light shining in the night sky whilst security is on the ground.

Cheers Kev.

bummer steve .. though they only have the one night meeting each week by the looks.., they'll probably flip em on for track work every morning .

I DO like the way you think Jen, but I think I'll hope for a more conventional solution for now.

Maybe the punters will do their dough in the day races and not show up for the night races causing it to flop and the lights to stay off.

Here's hoping Steve

Yea, Ric, that may be so, but they will keep the lights on, just in case they do arrive, so they can do some more dough.
