The question is....what will I end up buying this year (apart from balaclavas)?

Last year I walked away with $200 worth of books which was unplanned. I may have to haggle a bargain with Michael Chaytor this year on a filter or maybe even an eyepiece....

Hi Guys,

Need an opinion. The SPSP will start on 22-24 May. So if I take a flight from Kuala Lumpur, and touchdown at Sydney on the 21st, will it be ok? Reading through the detail descriptions on the SPSP website, it should be about a 3-hour drive from Sydney, right?

Should I camped out in the field? and what are the things I should prepare for that? Or would it be better off for me to stay at the nearest motel? Would I be missing anything good during the daytime, if I were to stay away from the camp site?

I will probably bring along my Mallincam Hyper and a lense, for wide-angle video. Is there power supply to recharged batteries at the site?

Flying back to Kuala Lumpur on the 25th (monday). Any suggestions for interesting places I should go before I leave? ;)

Missed the last 2 SPSP, this year is probably my best chance to go! Managed to dragged along a friend of mine. My first time going down under, so not that confident of coming in alone.

I have some friends studying in Wollongong, and will probably dropped by there first. Is it far from Wiruna?

Will start to book my flight ticket once all the details is being clear out. Really really hopefull, I can finally join in the fun with you guys in Australia! :prey:

...then 2 months later... Hangzhou, China for the eclipse! :D

busy busy year.. :2thumbs:

Hi Shah

I have only attended one SPSP (last year) and it was fantastic. You need to remember that there is a no vehicle movement on the property after dark policy in place, or at least there was last year. Which will mean walking down to the front gate in the dark. Last year I was up at the top house imaging and staying off site so I was tracking in the dark with red torch in hand. Bl**dy goats made me jump 10 feet when they moved around on one of the nights .

Off site I stayed at The Fairway Motel at a nearby town named Kandos. It is about 20 or 30 minute drive back to the motel but it is a very clean, neat and tidy country motel with a very friendly owner.

Wollongong is a city about an hours drive south of Sydney. Wiruna is a good 3 to 3.5 hour drive from Sydney West through the Blue Mountains then North from Lithgow on the road to Mudgee, turning off at Ilford. The event is very well sign posted and the organisers do such a fantastic job in organising and running the event . You could go from Wollongong up to Campbelltown and then across to Penrith the Great Western Highway, it would be a good hour or more longer from Wollongong to Wiruna.

I can't think of public transport options to get you to/from SPSP, certainly a train service runs from Sydney to Wollongong and back. A hire car might be your best option, in my opinion.

As others have said it will be cold at Wiruna in May. Expect the nights to get down near zero, but the days should be nice in the high teens or low 20s or there abouts.

Good luck with your decision and hopefully this year the weather will be as good as last year.

Regards
Wayne

Hi everyone,

Been thinking in and out on this star party, and the thought that it gets cold in the night, has it ever gone below -6 deg Celcius? What are the freezer suits like? Snow boots advised? Also, how about dew issues?

Thanks,
Remus

RayofLight

there are two kinds of people that go to SPSP
the ones with freezer suits - and the cold ones

some sort of snow boot or my Husky Boots are a good thing

being a month later this year you can expect it to be much colder than last year
i slept in my suit last year and the year before

A WORD OF WARNING TO THE WISE - if you want a freezer suit - don't wait till SPSP - order it now - i won't be taking a lot of stock this year (unless i win the lottery)
