Hi Rob,
Rotten mongrels indeed -- hope you get it back somehow.
After spending 23-odd years in the police (in a former life), I've investigated dozens of break and enter charges and as a prosecutor in court I must have prosecuted more than a thousand of them -- but the impact they have never really hit home with me 'till its was my home they broke into.
Scumbags.
Beside notifying the pawn shops, I'd also be contacting all the major vendors in your region because when someone inevitably tries to pawn/sell it, many pawn-brokers will ring someone like BINTEL or York etc etc to get an approximate valuation. If the vendors know about the 'scope, the more likely you are to get it back. You have to realise the pawnbrokers have little interest in getting thiings back to their lawful owners -- they are after all, only "officially state-licensed" receivers of stolen goods.
Hope your Megrez finds its way back home real soon!
Best,
Les D

I feel for you Rob,
no worse feeling.
hope you were insured
All the suggestions above are true but i found when I was broken into that the goods are often sent interstate by the scumbags.
We'll all be on the lookout for the gear

Having someone break into your house can leave you with a sense of violation that I would never have imagined if it hadn't happened to myself. Fortunately, I was insured (in fact, this became my preferred upgrade path for my laptop — twice). I sure hope you are insured. Otherwise, I wish you good luck recovering it.
Cheers,
Brian.
Hopefully it was insured, ;) if so I would doubt if i would ever want to see it again, can you imagine how they would handle such a piece of equipment. :scared:

Sorry to hear about your loss mate the person who it stole might try a bit of solar viewing with any luck. So instant karma.(may be a bit too harsh if only a kid)
I'm not usualy a vindictive person but thieves and looters I have no time for. We all work hard to buy our goods and some ratbag decides he wants them so he breaks in and takes them.
Anyway mate there are al least 5000 pair of eyes looking.
Cheers Manny

If you have nice long list of expensive equipment in your signature line, ...maybe a really accurate GPS position on this site is not a good idea.
(No, Im not imagining it, they are really following me..)

That's why there's a privacy option with your lat/long data. You can also reposition the marker to the next street.

When my big stereo was stolen in a break and enter in W.A. I found out that the criminal had pawned it at Cash Converters.
The police officially told me I could take the model and serial number down there and demand my stereo back.
Cash converters told me that the cops didn't know what they were talking about and that I was not allowed in their store room.
Ten minutes later, I had the police at the shop and they walked out with my stereo. I haven't trusted a pawn shop since and I refuse to buy from one.
I don't know what is worse, the theif, or the people who pay the theif.
I am not accusing pawn shops of having your particular scope in this case, but if a pawn shop does indeed have your stolen scope, don't expect them to volunteer the goods.
Baz.

Update.
I had no luck.
However, I may have some good news.
My next door neighbour was broken into a few weeks ago (bad news) and the police have caught the slimeball who did it.(that's the good news).
The investigations are continuing and maybe linked to what happened to me.
I have given up hope that my stuff will be recovered a long time ago.
But one never knows, I maybe lucky, very lucky.
Thank you all for your support.

Wow. That's terrible. If you do have house and content insurance that would be covered. I don't know what your situation is though. I've insured all my gear outside of the house and on trips as well should I have a car accident. It was only an extra $100.00 per year with GIO home and content. Worth every cent if you count the cost of replacing everything.

Hey Rob, :)
Its a safe bet he is the culprit. The problem is it has to be proven. Either he confess's or police find him or his mates in possession of the stuff.
These people are not usually stupid enough to keep the stolen goods in their own home.
I've been hit 6 or 7 times. The nosy neighbour is a good watch-dog.
Where I live now, the whole neighbourhood knows me. Four years ago a low life took my dog and broke into my shed, stealing tools.
People around the corner saw the idiot with my dog. Police took him to court. He pleaded not guilty at first. The evidence against him was in his house. He pleaded guilty eventually. I was paid restitution $500.
Make yourself known to neighbours, Take a beer or two over. I grow a lot of vegetables and hand them over when I have excess. The beer is good enough. Only once and they remember.;)
This burglar who hit your house may have sold it in a pub. Post a notice that you, or a friend is interested in buying the said item at a can not refuse price. If you get to view it say "Wrong colour".
You know what to do from there.
If its gone to Melbourne maybe the Victorian IIS members pay a visit to the pawn shops at their leisure. I visit the shops here in Brisbane and see some reasonable bargains now and then. I still look for gear that was taken 15 years ago.:mad2:
Well, I think I can say that there are a lot of eyes keeping a look out. I will here in Brisbane.
Cheers Marty
Hope it comes back to you.

That's horrid Rob, very sad news. I hope they catch the mongrel(s) that did this to you. I hope you'll get your scope back, good luck.
Pawn shops don't care, and the court system doesn't care. I'll tell you a story - years ago, my father's tool shed was broken into. $500 gear of tools stolen. Police caught the mongrel. It was his 4th offence (stealing) and he had drug offences on top of that. What did he get? A lousy 200 hours community service. Worse, the ******* had a court case pending for compensation against a previous break and enter attempt where he got caught by the owner and had the **** kicked out of him. Bugger won that case and walked away with $160k. You gotta be bloody kidding me!
I have a simply solution to theft:
First offence, take a finger off.
Second offence, take another finger off.
3rd offence, take the hand off.
4th offence, take the 2nd hand off.
Legislate that those who have lost fingers or hands due to stealing are unable to claim social security payments.
I guarantee that this will solve crime issues in under ten years.
Dave
edit: it saves on money spent and wasted on jail systems, and it stops the mongrels milking the welfare system, letting genuine Australians use the system. It sends a strong moral message to these mongrels that stealing is simply not OK. I might sound mean, but sometimes, these buggers don't deserve any pity.
