Rotary Youth Studying Astronomy & Related Sciences.

:scared:Nominations close Thursday 13 March 2009.:scared:

RYSTARS is a residential school for students in Years 9, 10 or 11 who are interested in Astronomy.

The camp will be held from 4pm on Thursday 2 April to Sunday 5 April 2009, which is the weekend before Easter. These dates have been chosen in order to be a part of the Cornerstone Project for the International Year of Astronomy, "100 Hours of Astronomy".

There will be a contribution by Dr Fred Watson, Astronomer in Charge of the Anglo-Australian Observatory and other experienced professional and amateur astronomers. A major focus is on actual observing during the evenings.

The camp aims to:
Develop an interest in astronomy and the various sciences and technologies related to it, such as mechanical engineering, information technology, optics and electronics.

Give students hands-on experience in handling astronomical equipment and undertaking guided observations.

Provide well-known and experienced astronomers, and others working in the field, as speakers and demonstrators.

Take students to a number of different observatories, giving them a wide range of experience of astronomical sites.

Students should contact their local Rotary Club for more information and sponsorship.;)
