Hi Folks,
Has been a while since I have posted any deepsky images. Have been a bit bogged down with various things and also had problems with some of the software I use for my processing not working correctly. Lost a few nice nights due to high humidity fogging up the Coma corrector and even suspect the Cmos in the camera as well.

Have been eager to try a section of the Vela Supernova remnants with the 8" newt to see what sort of detail I could get. After seeing Greg`s, Mikes and Bert`s widefield I decided on this region on the eastern edge which showed up fairly bright on widefield shots giving me the best chance to get some detail.
Image is 30 x 6 min @ iso 800 with 8" newt and Eric modded 20D.
Image is full frame and resized to around 30% with heaps of compression to get under 200k.
Took me three goes at processing this till I was happy with the outcome. As you can tell it is pushed very hard to ring out all I can from it. Glad the nights have been coolish compared to Vic, SA and WA at around 18-20*C

I have to try some more parts of the Vela SNR if the weather conditions are right!
Thanks for looking! and comments are most welcome

Oh I like that! Top image Gary.

Also you did the hours and bagged the result. 3 hours is a good exposure time for
any camera and brings out the best in your DSLR. The 20D is a great modded Canon, I have one of those
as well and have modded several of them.

A great result!

Nice to see excellent star colour variation which few DSLR users achieve.

Well done

That's amazing Bert. It is such a small slice of such a large complex.

What an interesting part of the southern sky.

Greg.

cheers Mike! I`d drink to that! lol (because it`s verrry hot at the moment!) :drink:

Thanks Greg! Yes true! I find 2 to 4 hours gives quiet nice results...
I must try something like a 6 hour run and see how it comes out.:)

Thanks Peter, I`m always very careful with the stars these days and try not to push them to the white point. curves are great for doing this.

Gee it looks so small when you show it like that! lots of opportunities for other closeups! Like Greg mentions what a wonderfully complex part of the sky!

Many thanks Trevor! much appreciated.

Awesome image Gary !!
Can I ask how long have you been doing the astro imagery stuff ?
How dark was it when you took the shots ?
Im just starting out (like just got my first scope/mount/slr) and to see pics like this inspire me to get out under sky..

and Bert a really nice job with superimpose.. I love the perspective it gives..

Thanks Clive, Matt and Marcus! :) most welcome!

jkrah, Have been doing imaging more seriously now for around 4 -5 years nut dabbled in it since the 1980`s without much success or improvement and many rolls of film allocated to the garbage bin.
But since I got a DSLR and joined IIS my skills have greatly improved over the last few years as has my gear.
cheers and clear skies and remamber it is a bit of a learning curve but it`s fun and inspiring seeing what materializes from your raw shots!

You really do get wonderful colours coming through in stars that rarely seem visible in other people's DSLR images - have to agree with the earlier comments. Keep on inspiring us Gary!
