This filter is pretty limited with it use , but a few of these mentioned here do show up some differant detail I have found .
Not chalk or cheese either but worth dusting off and seeing what you think.:)

1. IC 434 (HORSEHEAD NEBULA)
2. NGC 1499 (CALIFORNIA NEBULA, naked eye and RFT)
3. M43 (part of the Great Orion Nebula)
4. IC 5146 (COCOON NEBULA in Cygnus)
5. M20 (TRIFID NEBULA, main section)
6. NGC 2327 (diffuse nebula in Monoceros)
7. IC 405 (the FLAMING STAR NEBULA in Auriga)
8. IC 417 (diffuse Nebula in Auriga)
9. IC 1283 (diffuse Nebula in Sagittarius)
10. IC 1318 GAMMA CYGNI NEBULA (diffuse nebula in Cygnus)
11. IC 2177: (Diffuse Nebula, Monoceros)
12. IC 5076 (diffuse nebula, Cygnus)
13. PK64+5.1 "CAMPBELL'S HYDROGEN STAR" Cygnus (PNG 64.7+5.0)
14. Sh2-157a (small round nebula inside larger Sh2-157, Cassiopeia)
15. Sh2-235 (diffuse nebula in Auriga).
16. Sh2-276 "BARNARD'S LOOP" (diffuse nebula in Orion, naked eye)
17. IC 2162 (diffuse nebula in northern Orion)
18 Sh2-254 (diffuse nebula in northern Orion near IC 2162)
19. Sh2-256-7 (diffuse nebula in northern Orion near IC 2162)
20. vdB93 (Gum-1) (diffuse nebula in Monoceros near IC 2177)
21. Lambda Orionis nebular complex (very large, naked-eye)

Hi Nightstalker & All,

Thanks for posting that here -- it is a very useful little list.

Additionally, I think NGC 6334 in Scorpius (the Cat's Paw nebulae complex) an inherently LSB nebula also (from memory) seems to also benefit from H-Beta -- though I can't remember trying it out myself. I think I must have read it somewhere. Will have to try in a few months.

Best,

Les D

Awesome thread my friend :thumbsup::thumbsup:, I'm going to have to try as long
as we can see it in the south... with the H Beta in front of my eyeball :)

21. Lambda Orionis nebular complex (very large, naked-eye)

And thanks Les D for the couple of extras.

Great skies out tonight, but tooooo many beers in the belly hic! lol

Cheers,CS

Here are a few more southern ones that show difference between the visible and H-beta (486.1 nm) responses. I know of about dozen more, but I'll have to delve more deeply. I can recall that some of the obscure emission nebulae in Carina and Vela have had reports of observation using H-beta filters. (Astronomical Objects Southern Telescopes 2, I think mention them too)

Les mention NGC 6334 / Cat's Paw is certainly one
M20 - Trifid Nebula nebula looks larger to me.
Doesn't work well on the M42 Orion Nebula, though M43 jumps back at you. Some portions of Barnard's Loop
IC 410 - Greatest improvement than most
Murders most planetary nebulae - except the rather dusty or very old ones.
Some blue stars - Beta Crucis, Beta Canis Majoris

My off the head southern hit-list is...

IC 2631 11 09.9 -76 37 Chameleon Emission Neb
IC 2944 "Running Chicken Nebula" 11 36.7 -63 02 Centaurus Emission Neb (Around lambda Cen)
He2-73 / Sa2-80 11 48.7 -65 08 Planetary Nebula
Gum 45 / RCW 69 Centaurus 12 44.1 -62 29 Emission Neb
MyCn 18 / He2-95 Musca 13 38.1 -67 23 Planetary Neb

Best negative response ever is NGC 1514 in Taurus - the nebulosity disappears completely!

Comments:
- One huge omission in the northern list is NGC 7635 - The Bubble Nebula in Cassiopeia. It shows some extra structural differences without too much dimming.
- You are recommended to need a large exit pupil to make these filters effective
- Read Jack Marling's article on filters at http://home.earthlink.net/~astro-app/horsehead/Marling.htm

FANTASTIC! I've seen this list on cloudynights a few months ago and have been looking for it ever since! Thanks for posting :D

Rather concerned that my previous southern list is all that can guide us southern observers to these types of objects. :eyepop:
Does anyone know of other southern targets to add to the list of Hydrogen-beta wannabes? (Otherwise is seems a little short!) :help:

Andreas Alzner and Ronald Stoyan used a H-b filter on these objects.
IC 5146, IC 434, NGC 1499, Sh2 276, NGC 6559
IC 1274/5, IC 1283/4, Sh2 119, Sh2 168
They made a catalogue of nearly all Galactic Nebulae north of -33° Dec visible in a 14" instrument.

The only advantage of this rotten weather
is that I have time to find catalogues.
Is the attached text file a help??
