G'day all,
Here's my take on the partial solar eclipse from today, full sequence from start to end .. very happy with the results!
http://www.rogergroom.com/items/solar_eclipse_january_2009
Taken using my Megrez 80 SD with baader solar film and canon 350D. No image processing other than crop/copose them in to a sequence and levels to normalise the backgrounds to black.
More shots to come when I get time to put them on the web.
Was great to get to photograph the event under clear skies :D
Roger.

pretty cool Roger
Noice Roger!
On your website, one page says 5min between images and on another page says 10min.

Yeap, that's because I only included every second photogaph in the image, to save a bit o space :) ... I was wondering if I should explain that some how though... very good attention to detail you have there :)

I've added another 3 shots to the gallery. One which I find is a good comparison of the smooth solar edge vs the jagged lunar edge..

Excellent work, Roger. I'm expecting an animation any time now.. :)
Looks like a lovely spot to view it from.. and clear skies to go with it!

Thanks :) .. and yeap, working out how to make a movie of it, will probably get it done later tonight or tomorrow :)
It's a nice spot, a lake reserve run by the local shire about 10 mins drive from my house. I wasn't expecting it to be so busy! I photographed the smilie conjunction there and it was dead quiet ... but yesterday, being Australia Day and 33 degrees, every man, his dog, his kids and his esky was there!

Nice shots Roger!
I noticed the other guy(you ? ) trying to capture shots with DSLR through the PST mounted on reversed ED80. Did he have any success with this ?
Looks like he is trying afocal shots ?

Yeah, Dave was doing that through his PST. He did have some success, one shot in particular was sharp enough to just make out the jagged edge of the moon vs smooth edge of the sun. But no HA detail on the disc of the sun or any flares visible. We've found the PST really doesn't work at all well for photography.
I'll see if I can get one of his pics to post, with his permission.
(and yeap, ED80 mounted reverse, just to prevent any risk of damage if a cap were to fall off, he puts it on so he can attach the PST)
Roger.

Ok Great.
Yeah I tried this myself but couldnt reach a suitable focus; so spent most of the time visually looking through the PST. Would have been nice to capture the Prominence that were sliced and hidden by the eclipse as the moon passed through the suns path.

Very nicely done Roger! Like your viewing locality as well
Have commented already, but there's new images so....
Noice Roger!
hehe
Sad, I've lived in Perth my entire life and have never heard of this lake!
The name sounds french, like Cape Leschenault down south.

:)
Actually you're thinking of Cape Leeuwin down south :) Lake Leschenaultia I would guess is named after the plant the Leschenaultia, it's in Chidlow about 30mins out of Midland up Gt Eastern Highway :) It's a really nice spot for a picnic during the warmer months of the year, lots of people swim there, there's a fake beach of sorts along one side of the lake near the picnic lawns. $6 entry/car I think. Most of the time I cycle there from home so am not really familiar with pricing ;) (26.5km round trip from my home, nice ride)
Nah, there's a Cape Leschenault somewhere, now I'm not sure where tho. One quick google search says just north of Yanchep... tho I dunno about that, being an internet search :/
There's a Port Leschenault and Leschenault Inlet, in Bunbury-Australind, I guess they're one and the same?
Alot of that stuff down south has french naming, infact Flinders nearly had a head-on or rear-ender with a french ship rounding a corner down there somewhere.
Not crash hot on this stuff, but I'm guessing one of those frenchies was Leschenault.... possibly even the Cap'n?
Aha!
Was thinking it had to be out Stoneville or Mundaring way... wasn't too far off.
EDIT: hmmmm maybe Cape Leschenault is one of those urban developments, like "Secret Harbour" :screwy:
EDIT#2:
Which ties in nicely with the Leschenaultia :) Link (http://www.anbg.gov.au/biography/leschenault-tour.html)

Thanks:) I have to google the name every time I type it so I get it right  .. and that's bad coming from a family of Horticulturalists!
Thanks, it is a very nice spot :)
Yeap... lots and lots of french names, my favorite named one is D'Entrecasteaux ... that I definitely have to look up the spelling for!! Great place though.
Right! There you go! ... you nearly lost me ;)
