Do you have a dream of dark skies?
Want to get away from the neighbours' sensor light that's on most of the night? :P
Had enough of that street light with its company of moths?
Just after some peace and quiet?
Are there too many trees around the house? :(
Had enough of the neighbours cats using your yard and turning into a minefield in the dark? :mad2:
Or are you totally satisfied with where you live and don't care about the lurks and perks? :)

Where would you rather live if you could.

To start it off - I'd like to live on Lord Howe Island.

Catherine Zeta Jones' Guest House,

Failing that, the dark sky , country town I grew up in!
In a heartbeat.

I have an almost perfect spot (now!;)). After living in town with a street light over both my front and back yards and one over my neighbour's front yard, here is practically perfect... unless there somewhere is skies as dark and clear as central australia that's right next to the beach...

I wish we had a astronomy only town on the east coast of Australia. Close enough to be able to still see my kids but away from the street light. I will had something like they do over in Texas.

If the space elevator off the west coast of Australia ever becomes a reality, I'll take up residance atop of that. Otherwise I'll settle for the outback with optimal geographic conditions to suit. Just as soon as the last of the kids finish school, we'll be out of this light polluted setup;)

Lovely place just down the road from Bright.

Paragliding by day, stargazing by night, great scenery, lots of attractions to keep a family busy and a foodies paradise.

Well, I already live in that place.
Like I tell everyone that will listen, Broken Hill is a truly great place and very centrally located.

Cheers:thumbsup:

WA, heading back there soon.
Met some real nice folks over here in the East, but going back to the land where I feel at home :)

somewhere very remote. dark clear skies, somewhere around 400~500m ASL, at least 200km in every direction from the nearest large town, and at least 3kms from my nearest neighbour...

I'm with Alex, but would extend the nearest neighbour to 50 ks

I'll have to say that I am happy where I am on my little farm, fresh air and dark skies but best of all no real light to bother me for a least 35km and a lot of that is shielded by the hills.

Cheers

I have lived on this mountain, between the UK Schmidt and the AAO, but I prefer this view from where I am now.:D

Steve's first suggestion isn't bad either.

I'm pretty happy where I am at the moment.
There is a bit of a light dome over Brisbane way, but it doesn't take long for objects to rise above it.
And if you position yourself so the trees hide the lights from the neighbours, (bless 'em) it's all good.
The sky isn't as dark as our last property, but it's better for the kids to be where we are now.

Yeah, I'm happy where I am.
But Lord Howe Island wouldn't be bad either.:)

This is what I think would be ideal for me.

>150km from a capital city
>50km from any major rural town
30km from a small town big enough to have a supermarket
Easy access to great fishing.
Broadband internet.

I dont want much do i.

Came to Burpengary in 1991. Been trying to get out of the place ever since.
Road too noisy
Too much light pollution:mad2:
Too much air pollution:mad2:
Too hot:mad2:
If Queensland, it has to be Bunya Mountains no doubt about it. Cool, beaut skies, no traffic.:D:D:D But yes preferably 50 km to nearest neighbour. Oh dear, that rules out Bunya
Well, anywhere quiet and no neighbours and not in coastal lowlands. Gotta be Tas;)

There are plenty of places I'd rather live from the perspective of astronomy and landscape photography. But when all needs and wants are considered, I'm quite happy where we are now :). One of the 5 or 10 acre blocks in the area would be nice, but even then, they are further from shops and have other downsides :)

There's the odd one or two nice folk over here too :)... not many, but a few :)

I got the perfect place. Clayton bay, near the coast with seeing of 8-9.5/10 on a regular basis, sky is dark (well very dark) nearest city is Adelaide (77km as the crow flies), nearest town Goolwa (some light pollution from there but that is 30km away.

The town itself has a no light policy in place and enshrined in a local by law. Only 5 street lights working in the whole town of 130 residents and non of them anywhere near my place. 25 or so astronomers living there, ranging from rank amateur to well known names in SA astronomy.

Have not seen seeing less than 7/10 in all the time I have been visiting the area in 5 years. Sometimes the cloud can be a problem, but I do need to sleep sometimes.;)

Yep great place, close enough to the hospital just for those excitable nights.:)

And i was going to list my favorites as Antarctica, Iceland and lastly Tewksbury Tasmania.
cold - check
solitude - check
dark skies - check.
