Hey thanks for those links Sheeny and jjj! Has got my mind turning over a few ideas...
SO......just a few gumby questions from this beginner...
at present I have an 8" f/5 SW newt on an EQ5 with dual motor drives and toy with the idea of upgrading my mount to an EQ6 goto...my question is...would the MakCass design of the 7" LX200 improve light capture and negate the aperture wins rule (ie 7" Mak vs 8" Newt), or will there be less light due to 1) possible secondary mirror obstruction with the MakCass aqnd 2) less aperture?
Also, if I were, at some time in the future, thinking of imaging, would sticking to a faster scope (f/5) be of benefit over the Mead 7"LX200 at f/15??
I have pretty dark skies.
Thanks guys,
Kerrie

Kerrie - the 8" F/5 will gather more light than a 7" MC. At F/5 your 8" gathers light about 10 times faster than the 7" MC, and has more light gathering aperture...
My thoughts, Get that EQ6 Pro and put your 8" newt onto it... The Mak Cass will be very hard to image with, due to its very long focal length, it wont cool down as quickly...
That said, for visual work, the 7" F/15 mak would have its advantages... perhaps a bit more contrast due to it having a smaller secondary obstruction, but in an overall test of the two, I think you'd almost always be more pleased with the views from the 8" F/5...
Cheers.
Alex.
Blimey, what a bargain that would be if you won the bidding and got it for around 6K.
Somehow though I think it will go a lot higher.

Thanks for that prompt advice Alex - my (empty) wallet and I thank you...I just have to conjure up some moths from said wallet to invest in the EQ6.
Oh, but while I am on the subject of gumby questions, if you have a EQ6GOTO, can you turn the power off and use it as a 'push-to'? I rather enjoy finding things myself but would also like the ease of a goto.
Thanks,
Kerrie

hmmmm just around the corner too, and i could get the dome home on my truck. at 4k that would be an absolute bargain. pity i have all the other stuff. the mount is the celestron so its been around a little while (does anyone know when it just became under the losmandy name only)

Clive - the CG-11 was discontinued in late 90's afaik. Somewhere around 1998~1999 I believe. So yes, the mount and scope are fairly old.. however if you were to get it for 4k, keep the dome, you could probably get 4k for the scope/mount/pier... I've sent the guy a message reguarding splitting it all up.. he says he's had many people interested in just the dome, and just the scope.. etc... Said he'll contact me with reguards to the mount should he decide to split...
Kerrie - You can just turn tracking off, unlock the axis of the mount and hunt around, although it can be a right pain to especially with the angles that your eyepiece can end up with a newtonian... Best Idea would be to build yourself a Dobsonian base, and get the EQ6.. that way when you want to observe you can hunt around for things quickly and easily with the Dob, and then mount in on the EQ6 when its photography time

Hey you guys, if there are folks out there on IIS who are interested in the mount or scope or observatory, you could always get together and try to win the auction for the whole setup and then divvy up the gooddies appropriately after! You may get it cheaper if you buy the whole lot than if you end up bidding on individual items later if it doesnt sell in the first auction. (ha ha as if it wont sell!)

Someone retracted a bid...stating odd reasons, considering the time he bid and the time he retracted.
It is indeed odd.

Help me guys - under $7,000 for all that. That is a stunningly good deal, isn't it?
I would say that someone bagged a bargain in that auction, congrats to them.
