Venus in Ultra Violet Light - 14/01/2009

Hi all

This image of Venus was captured on the evening of the 14th January 2009 as the planet reached maximum elongation (greatest apparent distance) from the Sun. Still, the altitude at capture was only 25° and the atmospheric turbulance was very evident.

It’s my first capture of Venus in over 10 months and I figured I need to get it out of the way while motivation is still high :)

The image was captured with a Schuler UV filter which reveals clouds in the upper atmophere. Unfortunately due to the bad seeing, the albedo features aren’t well defined but some contrast variations are still visible.

Nicely done, Mike:). The banding in the upper atm' is quite evident in the piccie. Pity you don't have a SCT you could push to something like f/30-40.

Although with only 4/10 seeing, that'd be too much.

The subtle contrast you have achieved sets this off, considering how bland this subject can be..

Considering how low Venus is and how hot it has been lately, this is a good result. Heat energy absorbed by the Earth through the day is still radiating back into the atmosphere until the early hours of the morning, at least thats what happens out here.

All things considered this result, I think, is quite pleasing.
