Hi All,

got to say that I love this site. Congratulations to all involved. Very informative indeed.

Having read many of the posts I feel much more aware of what type of beginner scope would best suit me (probably an 8" dob).

I am also interested in joining an astronomical society.

There are 2 in Melbnourne i.e. Astronomical Society of Melbourne and the Astronomical Society of Victoria.

Any advice on which one I should join ?

I apologise if this has already been discussed.

Many Thanks.

Not strictly in Melbourne as such, but there is also the Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society (used to be Frankston society). If you are down this way, it may be convenient to you. I am a member of ASV and MPAS and enjoy both of them for various reasons.

Like Trevor I'm a member of both as well and I'm looking forward to the ASV's messier weekend on February 28.

I don't know about the others, but the ASV also have renta-dobs (8") I think, for members to use, which would be useful if you're tossing up buying one yourself

Thank you all for the replies. I'll give the ASV a go.
