After reading Jen's musical "Songs to do with Space..." thread, made me think of some of the retro space vids that I've sometimes seen on T.V. or over the Internet.

1) The first that came to mind was the British group M.A.R.S. "Pump Up the Volume" (1987). I saw this again on ABC TV's Rage a few weeks ago, and I recall the quality of the vid and sound was always absolutely dreadful. I found a very good quality version at ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGPhUr-T6UM , and this contains retro videos and animations taken from NASA.

2) Another one that I fondly remember seeing was once on ABC TV during September 1979 as a late-night filler. This was an interesting collection of NASA footage and animations set to the Album "Incantations" by Mike Oldfield. I never thought i'd see it again, but low and behold, I found it on YouTube, and the memories come flooding back...

Part 1 up to 2:28 was ripped-off by the 1983 movie "The Right Stuff". This is at; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3aKsTa7h7U&feature=related

Part 2 is probably the best bit, which I have attached here, which some the older IISer's might recall seeing it on television as .

Are there an other favourites others might know about or recall having seen over the years?

These two are the only ones I remember of hand at the moment...

Comment: The music in the last half of the Incantations vid are the words from Benjamin Jonson (1573-1637) "Hymn to Diana" of 1855. The lyrics/ words are;

"Queen and huntress, chaste and fair,
Now the sun is laid to sleep,
Seated in thy silver chair,
State in wonted manner keep:
Hesperus entreats thy light,
Goddess excellently bright.

Earth, let not thy envious shade
Dare itself to interpose;
Cynthia's shining orb was made
Heaven to clear when day did close:
Bless us then with wished sight,
Goddess excellently bright.

Lay thy bow of pearl apart,
And thy crystal-shining quiver;
Give unto the flying hart
Space to breathe, how short soever:
Thou that mak'st a day of night -
Goddess excellently bright.

Hi Enchilada & All,

Thanks very much for the link to the Incantations video. Incantations is my "most-listened-to" Oldfield album.

I thought I'd heard and seen everything Mike Oldfield but that was a new one.

One other I can remember off the top of my head is the opening scenes of the Director's Cut of Live at Pompeii by Floyd. NB It's not in the original film but in the re-issue currently available on DVD.

It has several minutes of NASA Apollo and Pioneer/Voyager images at the start of Echos Pt 1 -- less than five mins into the film.

Best,

Les D

Thinking of ELO, how about there classic "Ticket to the Moon", a vid of there classic "Time" album of 1982... No much space, but there is some inserts of Ed White first American space walk on 3rd June 1965.

What about during the 80s (and early 90s), in the afternoons, between shows on the ABC, they used to have the filler of a spacecraft taking off set to Thus Sprach Zarathustra. That used to do it for me every time.
