Scienceworks Planetarium Melbourne

Im thinking of taking my son to the melbourne planetarium in 2 weeks time :) well im using him as excuse to go for myself :lol::lol: but he is becoming a space geek too :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Do i have to empty my purse at the front counter ;)
Has anyone here been there?
What is it like?
Is it like a whole day thing or is it just like a museum that you walk around and go again?
Is there a merchandise shop there too :lol:
Any info would be great cheers :D

Jen, it has a souvenir shop - though most items i would say are expensive/ and bought cheaper elsewhere - though they do have the odd thing hard to get so...
Entry is $6 adults kids free, but for that you just walk around look at exhibits (general science) - to enter a planetarim show i think costs $3(look at the scienceworks website to see what shows are on for the day you are going - some are bit boring others very good - also depends child age, eg primary high school), and the lightning room i forget but guess about $5. If you do either a lightning or planatium show and then look around probably not full day but half day or little bit longer.
There is a nice grass area you can take your lunch out the back & sit down eat.. in summer sometimes they have little magic shows in a mini outdoor theatre where the eating caefs are.

I have been to the planetarium in Brisbane several times and I really enjoy it. Just before Christmas, we saw "Passport to the Universe" which was narrated by Tom Hanks. It was great and went for about 40-50 minutes from memory. We saw "shorts" for "The Search for Life: Are We Alone", which also looked good and is narrated by Harrison Ford. I think you and your son would enjoy the programs!

Great show for the kids...but be warned.

Tickets for the planetarium shows (and other shows like the lightening show) are on sale when science works opens aka at 10am.

These tickets sell fast...very very fast.

You cannot pre-order or buy tickets for these shows.

Be at the science works before opening (by 1/2hr at least if not earlier) and line up to ensure you get "Show" tickets.

i have found this the hard way...arrived at 10am...all tickets gone by 10.05am!:shrug:.

When you have your show tickets wander around the rest of the science works...Try to get tickets for the lightening show as well.

As already mentioned, get there early to line up for admission.
Last time we went, I found it was good to have a look beforehand to see which planetarium film you might like for yourself and your son.

The pumping station is a beautiful piece of machinery BTW.

The cafe prices is where you really empty your purse, IMO. You can bring your own lunch and have a picnic though.

I will be in Melbourne at the end of the month and I intend to visit the science museum. It leaves the Sydney powerhouse for dead in what it displays.

I love those big tripple expansion pump engines. Last time I was there about five years ago. The attendant was a fellow model engineer and I got the VIP treatment and a private tour over the closed area.
