I just know I'm gonna get in trouble for posting this AND I DON"T CARE!
The original was a seminal classic, It had it's faults, but it's a classic!
If they can improve on the original, or give it a modern spin, then that's all well and good. There have been quite a few remakes that have been respectful to the originals and have yet managed to carve out their own individual niche in popular culture (Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactia, The Thing, The Fly.) - but the batting average HAS'NT been good.
Haven't seen the new (and obviously improved) version of Day the Earth Stood Still, but most of the people I have spoken to reckon it's crap. Not my opinion,(I haven't seen it yet and won't until it arrives on dvd) but I'm still hopeful about it.
What annoys me about remakes is that it demonstrates what a dearth of fresh ideas and willingness to experiment with NEW ideas that seems to be so current in Hollywood today.
Having said that, the remake of Solaris by Soderberg/Clooney was a visionary and bold move by Hollywood which was lamentably ignored by the general popcorn-munching public whose only concern seems to be to leave their brains at the door.
IF this new version of FP can come anywhere near the original (or Solaris, et al) then I will be the first to applaud.
I live in hope, but it is a lonely existence at times.
Let he who is without discrimination cast the first stone!

It will have to be good to improve on the original. I'll never forget the menacing "blonk blonk" sound as the invisible Id creature approaches.

Apparently this new film will be a prequel and not a direct remake. I reckon there is room for both of them to be made.

Now who should be cast in the movie? Should we have a poll on this? I reckon Sean Connery for Dr Morbius.

Thats ok, hollywood is to busy partying, to truely care enough about making a decent original sci fi movie. Another measure of the decadents which the rich and greedy of our nation are so proud of.

If it's a prequel then they have room to play with, as all we know from the original is that the ships crew were killed by the Id.

Not many of the younger generation would even be aware of the original and so long as there is sex, violence, humour and special effects it should do OK.

Solaris is an awesome movie. It is depressing and cold, but, I love it.

Most of my friends can't get through it because they think it's too slow. Some people must have the attention span of a... goldfish? Solaris plays with your mind and evokes all kinds of emotions. As subjective as the expression of art is, I think this is somewhat a hallmark of a "good" work of art. This is something that irks me; I haven't seen any movies recently which evoke those kinds of feelings, or seems interesting and worthy of imparting my $15 at the box office to go and see.

I loved Solaris.
