Uploading images for IceTrade

Hi everyone,

I'm selling some equipment and am not quite sure how to get my nice images up. I tried hosting them on another website but they came out as thumbnails. The images are from my digital camera and over 2 Mb each. Is ther a way of getting them below the 600 Kb limit (prefferably using a standard windows application rather than downloading comprression software), so I can upload them directly onti IceTrade?

The limit is 200kb for jpegs. You just need to use any photo resizing software to resize them to something like 800px wide and then save them and they should come in under 200kb.

I'm also curious, exactly where do we upload images to. I don't see an upload area anywhere on the menus. Also I read somewhere that you can have the images showing as a thumbnail that will open to the full size when you click them. How is this done, not seeing any instructions anywhere.

Hi Clayton,

The images are uploaded to the IceInSpace server. We host them.

You use the "Manage Attachments" button when you're posting a new thread. If you're using the "quick reply" box, you won't see it - you need to click "Go Advanced" and then you'll see it.

Once you click "Manage Attachments", you browse to the image on your computer and upload it to IceInSpace.

That's when it'll appear as a thumbnail in your post.

The Image Resize Powertoy is not compatible with my Vista system but I managed to download a similar version made by a different software group for Vista. It works great, only there is no way of determining the file size of the image after resizing besides trial and error. To reduce the file size (rather than the resolution) do I need COMPRESSION software rather than an image resizing tool? Are the two different?

Resizing first makes compression less necessary. Compression is the reduction of file size by reducing the QUALITY of the image.

If you don't resize the image first, to compress a large (2 megabyte) image to under 200kb, it will have horrible artifacts and look terrible. Not only that, people will have to scroll left and right and up and down to see the whole image.

Resizing it to 800px wide first ensures that a) it will fit on people's screens without scrolling, and b) very little compression is needed to get it under 200kb - sometimes no compression is needed.

If you use irfanview (it's a free download) then you can set the amount of compression - more compression to get a smaller file size, less to get a larger file size.

Unfortunately it is trial and error unless there's a plugin for it that shows the file size, but you get to know how much is required. Even if it's 100kb that's fine - as long as it's under 200kb and when you look at the image it looks fine to you.

VSO Image Resizer is brilliant and it's what I use most of the time for just taking simple large size jpegs and resizing them to 800x600 for web posting.
The result is always under 200kb.
