Excellent detail there Peter, nice work.

Looks like it's shaping up to be a great image Peter ... look forward to seeing the finished pic.

indeed... well on the way to a top image! :)
Nice one.

Lovely image Peter. I'm not a fan of Ha images but this image stands out as something special. The detail in the dust areas and nebulosity gives a true 3 dimensional appearance to this.
Can I ask what type of Ha filter and how narrow is the filter?
I love it.

That Ha data looks darn nice Peter!

Very nice base for luminance. Sharp as. Top work.

Thanks to one and all for the positive feedback. :)
...just need the weather to co-operate for some more data.
I'm now using a Baader 50mm set. The H-Alpha has a 7nm bandpass. Reflections seem to be well controlled and the par-focal aspect is nice for narrow band work.

Thanks for the info Peter. I may have to invest in one myself.

I seem to have reached the point of diminishing returns with extra
H-alpha data, hence colour may follow if the weather co-operates!
new data added on the same link as before:

I agree Peter, I don't think you're going to get anymore out of it, especially at that resolution. Can't wait to see the L(Ha)RGB composite!!!:D

This will turn out very nice Pete.
Going to add some Lum or just going for a Hargb??
Look forward to the final composition.
Rich
Lovely work Peter. The challenge of adding RGB data will be an interesting one. Exceptionally contrasty data to work with that loves to washout the chrominance saturation. Looking forward to seeing the polished rendition.

Thanks Jase. The data looks a little more "chrunchy" at web resolution compared to the full res .tiff.
Looking outside...sigh... all I'll be able to add in the short term will be some stratocumulus opacus filtered frames :) .... and work commitments will have me away until well into the month. Might end up as a 2 year project!
Cheers

This is going to be a very nice image Peter....great work.
Now I did look, but did not see it...is this a single frame shot through your AP or is this a high-res mosaic using your RC?
Cheers

Thanks Martin....I thought I wasn't too shabby already :)
...the lack of diffraction spikes gives it away :) ...AP155, 2 frame mosaic with the 4" field flattner.

Yup....you think I would have worked that out...duh.
looking forward to final.

Some colour data now added.
In adding the colour, I was reminded why I avoid imaging the northern skies from my location.
Gradients drove me spare!
:( and unfortunately caused the loss of some nice faint background structures.
Anyway here is the result thus far The Rosette in colour

Rippa image Peter!!!
Grats on the A380 too. Hey, I can land a 747 9 out of 10 times in MS Flight Sim - think Qantas would take me?

Thanks :). Still needs a few few tweaks, but not too shabby methinks.
 That's about my success rate, so I don't see any problems!

So, Peter, what happens to all the passengers on that unlucky "10th" flight??!!:eyepop::scared::scared:
BTW....that is some exquisite image!!!!.....excellent!!!:D:D

Beautiful image. Nice to see the AP getting a work out. Hope the RCOS doesn't get jealous.;)
The centre area of the Rosette in some images often shows a bit of blue in some of the filaments. Worth checking out?
I use the Baader 50mm square filters as well as Astronomiks. I like them and as you say they handle the reflections very well
(as do the Astronomiks). I find they are very responsive in the reds but I have had some trouble with some weird colour combines with them
once in a while. To be fair though it is possible that they was some high cloud in those subs which can throw the scene off.
Haven't noticed a problem lately. The Astronomiks are only 1mm thick and that presents a problem as Gerd Neuman has only just offered
spacers for them -of course for "only" $100!!
How do you do your colour combine? I have been CCDstack and perhaps it doesn't respond as well as some other approach like perhaps using
Photoshop and assigning colours to channels?
Greg
:eyepop: very nice pic Peter

Thanks Greg....there are hints of blue but they don't seem all that obvious in my data....though a composite image to get more signal using the RC does does come to mind ;)
I use MaxIm for most of the grunt work. Calibration, alignment, stacking and basic colour stack. I layer H-alpha in Photoshop and do the usual colour tweaks there to get a black sky and no green stars :)

 No need to worry, I don't fly that machine anymore.
BTW eagle eyed list observers will have probably noticed various versions
of the image keep appearing at the same URL....sort of unannounced Sidonio-like repros :)... anyway I think I'm now done with this one.

...It's an uncontrolable fetish I'm affraid :P
Nice Sidonio like repro work on the Rose Peter, although you don't post large versions of your images (how come BTW?) lots of detail would clearly be seen in larger versions I am sure and it looks very APO'ish
Oh and BTW My 16yr old son did his first hour in a 737-800 sim at the Gold Coast last week and LOVED it. He was very excited and now more than ever wants to fly metal.

I like this version. The sharpened dust areas look fabulous. Gotta love those AP scopes.

Better keep the young fella away from the heavy metal....Airbus charge Euro 90,000 for an A380 endorsement...I kid you not...
As for very large files....maybe...sometime after July... ;)

I'll let him know :scared:
Oh com'on , ya kidding right..? So that means we all only get to see lower res images from you until after the almighty David Malin Awards then, ..?. I can understand perhaps you might choose not to release your very best effort/s "at all" but how will only seeing your released images in the meantime in low res make one iota of difference? Surely yo're not scared that someone will download your work, rotate, mask and coregister or perhaps even enhance their own work with it do you? ...hmmm? maybe you do...?
Oh well se la vi

I'd suggest you put that to Gendler, Block, GaBany, Croman et. al. They've all have their data ripped off. In short: sadly it happens. :(

Wow ! that's nice....yeah would of been a real challenge holding on to good colour, you done brilliant.
Sensational result Peter. Did you rework the original Ha data or use the same you posted previously? I would imagine you'd struggle to keep the colour saturation on the original. Well done.

Thanks Jase. Just a data rework to get the levels and luminance blend under control.

Hi Peter,
This is a stunning image indeed, congratulations. Would you mind if I download it and use it as my desktop background. I understand it is copyright and I will acknowledge you as the author should anyone ask - anyways I only work in 25 second monochrome images for my Supernova search so no chance of me repocessing it etc, etc. It is just inspiring. Thanks for sharing it.

No problem. (Just leave an envelope full of unmarked bills at my postal address :) )
Sadly work commitments (I'm out of the country for a bit) and a lack of an automated focuser on the AP, means no more imaging by me for a time now.

Very cool. I really like the change of colors from dark red on the borders to subtle bluer shades in the center. The dark nebulosity against the lighter background is really sharp too. Real nice.

Thanks Martin....and to the many others who have enjoyed viewing the image.
It still has a little tweaking left in it...but any changes I make from now will be subtle at best.
