The Proteas have taken the second Test match and as a result the series against Australia.

It's their first series win ever in Australia, and the first series loss for the Aussies on home soil in something like 17 years.

A mighty effort by the tourists, indeed.

Commiserations to Ricky Ponting and his team. All things have to come to an end eventually.

A lot of things went wrong with this series from an Australian point of view, nonetheleast being the failure to fire from most of the side's senior players.

As Ian Chappell and Ian Healy commented during the lunch break, it's a fabulous opportunity for selectors to reassess and look to rebuilding following the loss of so many great players in recent times and the imminent departure of a few more.

One comment they made, which I agreed very strongly with, is there needs to be a return to the attitude of the mid to late 80s...when there was a focus on bringing through a crop of young, talented players. It's hard to know when to let some of the older heads go, especially when they've been such a key part of past glories....but it has to happen. We've also not been so aggressive in our youth programs.

Times like these should be looked at in a positive way. It's time to take stock and ring the changes.

Having said that...despite injuries and players horribly out of form, both Test matches went to five days and the Aussies were very competitive. Just no 'killer' instinct like days gone by.

Again...hearty congratulations to Graham Smith and his team. That's a fine effort:thumbsup:

And hey....it is, after all, just a game.

Yea, go on them, they were the best on the day, the ossies can't win all the time, now they might have to do some more training.

Hi Matt & All,

Yep, South Africa were certainly the better team in the series so far and deserved their wins. Australia had a chance to win this test back on day two/three and were found wanting.

I can't quite agree with you Matt on changes to the team (apart from the forced ones). Given the series is lost, I'd like to see young Phil Hughes given a run in place of Matt Hayden to see what he's got at the next level. Don't make to many changes or people start playing for their place in the side instead of the team. Witness the early to mid '80 and what happened there.

For Sydney Bollinger in for Lee and Hughes for Hayden that's it I think.

Beau Casson must be sitting somewhere wondering what he has done wrong -- his name isn't even mentioned anymore and he did nothing wrong to warrant being dropped after only a test or so. Krejza ditto. Watson's seeming non-stop run of injury must be making the selectors now think he is physically flawed and can't be trusted over the full stretch.

Notice how many cricketers are breaking down that played in the IPL? Simmons, Clarke, Lee and now Watson. Will cricket Australia get compo from IPL for these "stress" related injuries to our test stars?

There is too much elite-level cricket being played that has undoubtedly contributed to these injuries -- get rid of the IPL.

(Rant mode disabled)

Best to all, particularly the deserved South African victors (this time)

Hi Les.

Nah. I'm not saying there needs to be wholesale changes...but changes just the same.

I agree with you re: Phil Hughes. A very exciting prospect who might not be far away from proving himself at the highest level, and obvously there's a bit of shuffling required in the bowling ranks due to injury and the need to find a few newies.

I'm still not sold on Krejza, but I think Bollinger is certainly worth a try.

Interesting times indeed.;)

All good things must come to pass and Australia's era of dominance is over. I think everyone understood this would happen when a crop of the greatest players the game has seen retired virtually at the same time. The good news is that our domestic competition is strong and so I don't think we'll fade away the Windies did after the Lloyd/Richards era. I expect us to fall below SA and India in the rankings but I really hope we stay above England. The fall from our pedestal won't be too painful so long as we can keep on Pommie bashing. ;)

Now is the time to bring in the younger players and give them the experience they need. The older players should now be inspiring them in the way that AB did in the 80's and Tubby Taylor did in the 90's.

We'll have some lean times but we are back on the learning curve again and it will take a while to get back up there again.

The selectors have made the changes.

Three previously uncapped players have been named in the squad.

BollingerMatt Hayden could possibly consider himself lucky. Possibly.;)

Hi Guys

Check this out http://www.howstat.com/cricket/Statistics/Matches/MatchListCountry.asp?A=AUS

It would appear that Aussie has never lost a 3 test series 3-0 at home
better hold on to your hats for the SCG test !!

And while they're still licking their wounds, the Mighty Blackcaps wil return to exact revenge in the ODI & 20/20 series ;)

Good Luck Australia

Happy New Year Folks

Funny how a new player has an injury and gets left out - and an old player with an injury is given a chance. Perhaps a certain amount of 'mateship' is on display and sometimes clouds selector decisions.
Hats off to Ponting though - he's batting great, and i think he's a good captain.

We'll be back on top before you know it - we's aussies mate:thumbsup:
