OOPS!!! CHECKED MY DATA AND FOUND THAT THESE SHOTS WERE DONE AT 100mm NOT 280mm AS POSTED!!!

Hello all,
Bit of an experiment - wanted to see if the Witches Head Nebula could be captured with my DSLR.

Verdict - very tough!!

Total of 9x10min subs (need heaps more),280mm f5.6, iso1600 ICNR on, Flats.
Canon 40D modded
Canon 70-200mm f4L + 1.4x extender, Hutech IDAS LPS2 filter.
Skywatcher Synscan EQ5 GoTo mount.
Autoguided with PHD

Had to do some rough ad hoc processing - removed starfield from one image to accentuate the nebula then recombine with the original image.
My skills in this area are poor so apologies for the roughness of this one!

High Res...

All the best, any suggestions gratefully accepted.

I must say that is a wonderful image of this VERY faint nebula.

Well done Doug. Sorry I have not got any tips as I am still to learn much in this area.

Thanks Lester - I think loads more subs might be the way to go, might even try pushing into the 15-20min sub territory!!:scared:

Excellent image Doug of this illusive nebula. :) I think you have done a great job with it.

Like you said, more subs would definitely be the go to capture more detail in the nebula.

Great work.

Very nice.
I have to admit that I normally struggle to see the 'witch', but with your image it was easy-peesy, tho I do have a knackered kneck now ;)

Great image with the lens, well done.

Just looking at the first image, just above the Witch Head there's a green fuzzy, is it a comet or another Hanny's Voorwerp?

Wow Doug that's pretty nice! A really lovely field and nicely composed. You've handled it quite well IMO.

Yes the gas and dust in this field is very tenuous and needs exposure and heaps of it, particularly with an uncooled DSLR in summer :scared:

It looks quite ok as is but if you can go at it again hit it with as much exposure as you can and you could have a fantastic image indeed

Nice work

Mike

Nice shooting Dougie !!
I thought it was a little wide for 280mm but still it's a lovely capture mate !

It's great to have that versatility in the lens to be able to zoom your FOV to suit the object.

Yeah Andrew - only sussed when Rigel was nowhere to be seen in the 280mm FOV last night:doh:
Those 280mm shots should be good as the Witch Head fills the frame very nicely. Managed to grab 5x10mins last night - looks like it'll be a labour of love this one!
Cheers

Hi Doug,

Thats IT! I have had enough of your mistakes young man! I hereby forsake all nice comments about your images because you can't get the details right! Never mind the sloppy processing and PATHETIC framing and tracking.

Smarten up your act or you won't have any people looking at your CRAP astrophotos anymore and even BOTHERING to reply to your dribble....

 just kidding! as usual! Please dont hurt me! ;)

You shouldnt have mentioned it, we all thought you were a wizard who could take widefield shots with a 280mm lens!

Sensational pics Doug, I especially like the 90 degree version, "I'll get you my pretty!!"

Just Beautiful

Cheers

Thanks Jen
Its boring name/number is IC2118 and it's located very close to Rigel (very bright star in pic) in Orion...although the nebula itself slips into the constellation Eridanus.
Happy hunting!
