hi all merry christmas and a happy new year
watch the sci-fi earth stood still today didnt know what to expect hadent seen the original. the special effects were great but they are like that in most movies know. the story was excellent how it compares to the original i dont know someone will reply .i wouldnt say it was the best movie i,d seen but well worth it those on a tight budget wait till dvd man o man it's dear at the movies now:shrug::shrug:
movies like this get me thinking about the planet we live on and how it's being treated but that is me(maybe the children we bring into this world changes us like that)while observing next time just might see something up there you never know:P:P
over all a 7out of 10
mozzie:thumbsup:
just saw it and its a complete letdown/no ending?

I was disappointed. They shifted the story to reflect that humans had caused great environmental damage instead of the original being about atomic weapons and aggression being taken into space that would not be tolerated. IMHO they screwed this one. A remake with same cast and story as the original would have been much better. my 2cents.

Was there any question that they would screw it up? There are not many remakes/reboots that they dont stuff up

That would of been a little difficult to manage, most of the actors from the 1951 original film are no longer with us ;)

Out of all the like and dislikes I really dont care, At least you all made the effort to go and see the movie........cheers Kev.
Well it will be new to me cause i havnt seen the original either
I cant wait to see it
I went and saw this movie today.
I felt absolutley let down
The script was garbage and Keanu Reeves was miscast.
The only shining light in the whole film was Jennifer Connolly who I thought at least brought a bit of drama to a film that IMHO is a dog
woof woof woof
Went and saw it a few days ago.
Judged on its own merits, I'd put it in the average category....but using the original as a yardstick, it was below par.
I also felt they skewed the story.
It also felt rushed after about the halfway mark. I find this quite common among today's 'blockbusters'. The build-up is often quite good...but then it's all ruined with tons of CGI 'shoot-em-up' effects and a mad scramble to wrap the film up.
I did like the idea of the nano-bot-type technology....and the concept that the human race does not 'own' the Earth, and that the planet's survival is far more important in the grand cosmic scheme of things than that of the human race.

cant remember the plot of the first .. so as a standalone movie without reference to the first its good, i like the fact that 1.the Govts are paranoid and dont act sensibly (true),2. that we have destroyed to some degree our planet (true),3. and that we will not check our behaviour in this problem (true). so it touches on several actual relevant issues that face us today.. the ending is lame though, i liked the end of On The Beach where everyone dies, a little more believable and i would have preferred it to finish that way with a new dawn arriving on a restructured planet living in balance, i think that would make more of a point to the three issues above.
Mind you if a contact was made from a "civilization" from elsewhere in the galaxy, they would be so far ahead .. firing guns at them would be so dumb, they could just erase us from orbit or higher. plots such as independance day where we " take them out " is a nice fantasy but thats all.

Saw it last night with a couple of mates. Visual FX were amazing. But take that away from the movie and it was an empty shell. Interesting concept but streched to death. Nearly fell asleep. Very disappointing.

Saw it the other night. A very painful remake of a classic. In my opinion absolute rubbish.

That sums it up for me too, Matt.
I thought his conversion from being on a mission to destroy humans to having some sympathy and understanding was too sudden...
But I did enjoy the nano-bots as well as Keanu Reeves' genuinely puzzled look when he said to the officials "Your planet?" ... Quite poignant-maybe we sometimes forget that it's not "our" planet; we are just lucky to be along for the ride for a short period of time!

Its now out on DVD (1951 version); saw it in Sanity Music store (WA) the other day. Possibly video rental stores should have it on the shelf.

Have to agree. The original was good but this remake was stupid. No real story and quite loose. A big dissapointment
Pleased that these comments have been posted. I saw the trailer and was interested until I noticed that Keanu Reeves is playing Klaatu. I would have thought with his acting ability that playing Gort would have been natural for him.
Anyhoo, after reading these comments I've decided that I'll pass on this one. Sometimes keeping the memory of a classic unsoiled is the best thing to do.

I watched this on DVD on the weekend. I haven't seen the original so watched it on its own merits.
As a sci-fi, it was enjoyable. Light entertainment.
Sort of reminded me of "War of the Worlds" with the aliens/spheres laying in wait under the ground for the right moment.
Not edge of the seat type stuff but a good way to spend 100 minutes.
The new version isn't as dramatic as the original but of course the special effects are more modern. I liked the switch from the nuclear issues to the environmental ones. I thought Keanu Reeves played the alien as a detached observer quite well. However, the reasoning behind his change of mind was not developed seriously enough and the ending seemed abrupt. John Cleese's role was too brief.
Overall, enjoyable but needed to have more depth.

I loved the original too................and I definitely LOVED the forbidden planet!!!! Basically I'm into Sci-fi big time and have been since I was about 7. I'm heading off now to pick up a Blu-Ray of this flick now. See what happens :) Hopefully the sound will make up for any short commings.
Remakes rarely impress me...I think they destrotyed "Battlestar Galagtica" That's a long story......and I'm not impressed with what I have seen in the latest attempt of a star treck movie...I mean come on...using actors from Home and Away.....LOL........Guess I just expect too much. Each to thier own.

I was mega dissapointed with this flick. I was expecting big things. The part that really made me wanna puke was the guy supervising the drone pilots, over acting at its worst and they should fire the military advisor.

Destroyed Battlestar Galactica? I think that the new series was so superior to the old (what I saw as kiddy sci-fi) version it's incredible. Not sure that there was actually anything to like in the old series - the kid and his fluffy robot dog that sqeaked? The camp acting? LOL! Each to their own :)

I thought the movie was a joke, very stupid story...

LOL Chris...I guess the porn version has more attraction. Like most things theses days. I guess it's like comparing Lost in space to LEX. :) Mabey they'll get some cheap XXXX stars to remake space 1999...LOL and if your lucky, you may see some fairy's in that too :)

Not following you Dave - porn version?
Forbidden Planet (1956).
Would that ever be a good film to remake if they take it seriously!
Loved the original. Great concept ... creatures created from the depths of the "id". Way ahead of its time.
And Leslie Nielsen, the captain of the space ship, is still making films.

No worries Chris...no need to serve my words up on a platter...quoters rarely draw the best out in people...If you don't understand my sarcasm, I wont hold it against you. Lets just say I'll side with the fluffy robotic dog anytime over some blond headed cyborg constantly on heat. :)
LOVED the movie! "The Day The earth Stood Still" Yea the new one as well. I know, I probably need me head read. The HDMA sound was Awesome "as usual" ...Loved the SUB...really blew us out of the chair...I've heard better...but still...it rated high with us...The timing and mix was also great with definite separation...not quite as good as irobot...but it was there...sound was just under 8/10...IMO...
I think you get more out of it if you liked Independence Day- with the Military build up and general hysteria, The Abys- with like the shiny sphere concept and contact, Matrix- computer infiltration, Spider Man- Sand Man like special effects with the ever growing Nano tech cloud eating away at all it touches........list goes on from there... Special Effects where pretty good on Full HD spread across a "BIG" screen.
Over all...despite the differences...the story held up...sound was great & picture good enough. Nothing to complain about...I normally buy my blurays & would of been very happy if I had done so with this one, instead of renting it like I did...I'll be shelling out for it to add to my collection.
I was surprised after reading most of the posts here...but that often happens to me with movies others rate as disappointing. Hopefully most will think the same of the new star trek movie...but I doubt it...then again..I might be pleasantly surprised. Took a while for the new enterprise series to grow on me.....but that was more to do with the change of intro and the fact that many of the characters do not appear to be as interesting...none the less...I have enjoyed many an episode in of that.
Back to -The Day The Earth Stood Still...Having watched the earlier version, and despite elements of the story being different...I got a lot out of having viewed the original version first...If your into Blu-Rays for the Home Entertainment value...then you want see it as a waste of time...Beats the hell out of some of the crap that's been coming out.

Quoting is a most legitimate way to commence a retort. It helps lead into a reply - that's why the button is provided. There are plenty of "quoters" here on IIS. It's used a-plenty.
I inderstand your "sarcasm" plenty Dave - just didn't think it was terribly well presented. Sorry. Lets just say that your definition of "porn" is quite different to most people's I know.
PS - the "with like the shiny sphere concept" was "The Sphere", not "Abyss".
Not looking for an argument with you old bean.

Its even more ahead of its time than you think, its based on "The Tempest" from Shakespeare

Hey, does a pretty brunette (if that's what she was in the original B&W version) say "Gort, klatu verada nickto" anywhere in the movie?? If not, it's not a proper re-make and I won't be watching it! :P:D
BTW, I shudder to think how Hollywood will/would destroy a re-make of a classic like Forbidden Planet. I'd prefer they make NEW classics.
Cheers, Marcus

Yep - and when I was doing my HSC in 1980 we had the choice of studying The Tempest in its traditional form, or taking the movie route. It wasn't a real hard choice. It's still my favourite film of all time.
If they do a remake, then that's OK - however good or not it turns out, it won't ever take away from the original. Actually, I'll generalise here and suggest that remakes are all OK - as we're not being told as such that the original is being replaced, and won't have access to it any more. Often as not, a remake will re-kindle interest in the original, so this is good too. I can't imagine that a large percentage of the young movie-going public has even heard of the original Forbidden Planet. Maybe a remake will prompt some to watch the original as well.

indeed.
Forbidden planet was so ahead of its time, that i still think it stands up today, even if the effects are looking a little dated.
I think for me it totally encapsulates that image of 50's Sci-Fi with flying saucers and ray guns etc. in much the same way that Blade Runner summed up that 80's industrial sci-fi look, that lead to The Matrix etc. such movies are priceless
i keep looking for it in 1080p, or at least 720p and a good HD-Audio or at least DTS soundtrack would be excellent.
