Hi guys.

After a good idea by acropolite, i've contacted Quasar Astronomy (http://www.quasarastronomy.com.au), the producers of the must-have yearly almanac "Astronomy 2005" to see what's involved in getting a bulk order discount (for IceInSpace members) for next years edition, Astronomy 2006.

They'll send out more details to me at the end of October (costs etc), but this thread is just to start gauging interest to see who would want to obtain their copy in this fashion.

So vote in the poll, thanks!

Mike, where can I find out what it is. I have never seen it. Do they have a site?

Don't know if I want one if I don't know what it is.

EDIT: Oops! Sorry, just found the link in your post above.

I've been getting mine from the ANSW or was it for signing up for one of the magazines...?...

I don't remember but with some joining fee I've gotten one "free" the last 2 years...so I won't likely buy one...

I voted no because I only buy it once every few years..if I were to buy it I would surely buy from IIS

Mike,

Just to give you a heads up, I spent 3 or 4 hours observing with Glenn Dawes at this years SPSP, Glenn is 1 of the co authors of the Astronomy yearbook. He showed me some samples of some really nice colour charts that he proposed to incorporate into subsequent issues of the ephemeris. The 2006 edition should be really good and something that I really couldn't afford to be without, particulalry considering the low cost of about $20.

Agree with John's comments. The 2006 yearbook manuscript is being sent to me for proofreading next week ahead of going to the printers in October (I do this every year), and I'm looking forward to seeing it. I think it's a very handy guide for amateurs.

How can you possibly get along without a copy?
I've cut out, and laminated the star maps. I use them every observing session.

I don't see why one would need a new star atlas every year. Not much changes apart from the planets. I have the Southern Sky Guide (Cambridge) I picked up 2nd hand for $11; and the Stars & Planets (Princeton) atlas which has individual maps and detailed descriptions for every constellation and lots of info about astronomy and lots of colour photos, real bargain at $8 new at a book sale. I'm sure I'll be using them for many years to come. :D

I'll have two Mike. One as a gift to someone else, the other for ME....I'd be lost without my Astronomy 2005.

Steve the 2006 Astronomy is an Ephemeris(?) for the position of the planets and moon for the 12 months along with Jupiter and Saturn moon positions, rise and set times for all planets, major minor :P planet positions, monthly important planetary, cometary, asteroidal and occulation information, Blah Blah Blah. I couldn't do without it. I have the Southern Star guide as well and the two book go everywhere with me (along with the cambridge star atlas)

No thanks.

I don't need a book as a guide!!!!!!!

I need a professional who can tell me what to do!!!!!!

I need to get back to Peter at Quasar about how many an IceInSpace Bulk Order would consist of, in order to find out how much our discount would be.

If you haven't voted yet (only 34 people have!), then please vote now.

Astronomy 2006 is a must-have almanac for the 2006 astronomical calendar. so if you haven't tried it yet, it's well worth it.

Retail it goes for about $22, so our bulk rate is likely to be cheaper than that. It's at a good price, won't break your budget, and has loads of info for the coming year. It's also going to have a paragraph or so about IceInSpace! :D

Please vote ASAP so I can get back to Quasar.

Last chance to register your interest - i'll be placing an order with Quasar Astronomy in the next few days and because IIS is a new bulk order customer, I need to pay in advance.

So please make sure your intention is genuine as I will need you to pay for your copy and PM me your address for postage once I've put in the order. While I think it's a great book, I'm not keen on having 30 or more copies of Astronomy 2006 sitting on my bookshelf at home :)

I'll get back to you with costs in the next day or so. They'll be available in November.

The price is likely to be $23 posted to your door. The RRP is $24 and you'd have to pay extra for postage.

Some of the bulk order discount is passed onto you, and some is put towards the running of the forum.

Will confirm costs once I check with the post office and have placed the order.

Sounds great Mike.... happy to help meet costs for this great site.

I use the star maps too, but find them not comprehensive enough in terms of star mags shown - really good to find your way around naked eye, but once you start off with binos and especially a scope it falls down. I think the mag 7 star sharts free at cloudy nights are better for this....
But saying that my Astronomy 2005 is pretty manky now, with dew/dirt/dog slobber from my observing nights, I never leave home without it!
