Hi all,

This is my second attempt at the HH, I was quite happy with the first, posted a few months ago here:
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=36462
...except for the flare around Alnitak which was driving me crazy, it was a technical rather than aesthetic issue that I wanted to resolve.

So... after playing around with the positioning of the UV/IR filter on the QHY8, I present my HH redux, with much reduced flare :)

I still think I could improve the post-processing, but due to demand (thanks Marc) I've decided to post what I've got...

9 x 600s subs, QHY8, gain 1, offset 58, Nebulosity 2.0.5, stacked in DSS
127ED refractor for imaging, QHY5 and ED80 guiding, EQ6 and EQMOD ASCOM pulseguide.

Thank you for looking.

Cheers,

Rob

Well Rob that seems to reveal the UV/IR filter as the culprit for causing the halo? The halo in the first post was smaller but brighter while this one is much bigger but fainter, one could assume this has occured due to change in filter position? Maybe you should try another filter brand?

The colour balance in this later post looks better.

Lovely image.

Plllleeeeeeaaaaaseee! Tell me more about the repositioning of the UV/IR filter.. I've been having this same problem with my QHY8 on bright stars, I mentioned in your last post that I figured that it was due to the cameras UV/IR filter...

Originally I thought it was my scope being a doublet rather than a higher quality triplet, then I saw an image posted on another site using a QHY8 with a FSQ106, then I realized it must be camera related...

Any more info about where you moved the filter would be greatly appreciated.. This flaring really irks me.. I get it in 10min subs of M42, 15min subs of eta car etc.. its REEEALY annoying.

Lovely image.. especially for 90 minutes data! the 127+QHY8 is proving to be a fantastic matching...

Very very nice Rob. Colours are just amazing in the reflection nebulaes.
Loads of details be hind the HH as well. Top shot. The halo is much bigger and fainter. You can actually get rid of it totally and quite easily in PS now as it's quite manageable. Top shot mate!

Ha Ha I'm a city dewller too, with a big fuel bill!

Thanks Mike, the front filter positioning is indeed an issue and the fix is remarkably simple...

Thanks! Maybe I'm getting the hang of this imaging stuff...
There's nothing wrong with your scope, it's the interaction between the CCD and the filter in the QHY8.
I just posted a little message about my QHY8 mod...

Thanks Marc! That last weekend at Wiruna was a beauty hey? (Don't tell Mike) ;)
