Hi Jen, my back piece is of an Amazon women with her pet Smiladon (Sabre toothed tiger) in a canyon and rising over the canyon and across my shoulder blades is a rendition of our galaxy to give that off-world feel about it. Still a work in progress at the moment so I won't show it off just yet as it's only half coloured.
My right arm has a dragon and it's castle and in the background there are some Saturn style planets amongst the stars.
Also planning a little Marvin and his scope on my leg above the ankle but I'm going to replace his scope with a LX200R style scope.
Cheers

I'll see what I can do.
It's not easy to take a photo of your own left arm and neither of my dogs are much good at photography either. In fact, they only really have four skills - eating, sleeping, chasing rabbits and getting patted.
Reckon we should hassle Ric for a couple of photos too.
Dunno about Eric's, though;)
No astro tatts
Have a tattoo of a wolfs head on my right arm though.
Got it about 15 yrs ago - still in good knick
Been thinking about another one but I just don't have the time.

Ok Phil & Jen here's my back tatt. It's before the Milky way went in along with the start of the colour but you'll get the idea.

Nice tatt Ric.
Would like to see another image when it's complete.
Thanks Phil, probably about another 12 months to completion.
A 2 hour session is usually enough on a back job and then allow 3 to 4 weeks to settle in and heal.

I should have had the cosmos tatooed on my stomach when I was 20. That way I could demonstrate the expanding universe.

Good one:lol::lol:
My gut could've expressed the expand/collapse theory over the last 18 months - but the collapsing isn't nearly as easy as the expanding - hence the prevalence of the currently accepted model of neverending expansion i think:lol:
I was thinking of a portrait of Carl Sagan.
After the recent pricing debacle on CGEM, I am getting my Celestron tatt laser-ed off!

No tatts for me, but constantly got astronomy on the mind, like if I am out somewhere I will often check out the night sky and if it's a clear night I would be thinking.... I should be at home imaging, especially as clear nights have not been coming around here that often lately.
Cheers Daniel.
:eyepop:wow nice tatt Ric thanks for showing us  will be awsome when its finished  i really really want to get a tatt but im a chicken hahah:rolleyes:
:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
LMAO Astral you crack me up sometimes
Thanks Jen:thumbsup:
My advice for anyone thinking about a tatt is to
1. Make sure you really want it and it's not a spur of the moment thing, they don't wash off in the shower. A good idea is to forget about them for a few months and then if you still want one then your usually ready.
2. Check out you local tattoo shop and make sure they are clean and have single use needles etc
3. Check out the tattoist's work, some are artists but others can't even draw stick figures. Even be prepared to travel.
4. Think outside the square with a tatt, the pictures on the shop wall are standards which means everyone else probably has the same. Search the web for pictures it's a great resource. All of my tatts are original ideas in conjunction with my tattoist.
5. Take care of it, avoid salt or chlorinated water for a few months. Use vitamin E cream and dont cover it, avoid sunburn and the big one is as it heals it will flake, dont pick them off as you will be pulling out the colour as well and it will end up blotchy. A tattoo can take up to 8 months to fully settle in.
Cheers:)
 thanks Ric i will keep that all in mind cheers :)

Funny how this thread has popped up again.
I've just about decided on the astro tatt I want.
An armband of tiny constellations, Scorpius, Leo, Crux, Orion, amid swirls with more stars dripping down off it. Not much colour, just a dab of red in the heart of Antares and Beteljuice.
It will all be quite fine and delicate.

I love astronomy but blowing 200 bucks just to endure blinding pain for 2 hours ain't gonna happen! That 200 bucks will be much happier inside the till at Dan Murphy's or even Bintel :D

No Tatts for me either.
But I am obsessed enough to have worn marks in the timber floor between where my scope " parks" and where I drag it outside and back in again on clear nights.
There is also some sort of Astro stuff in every room in the house. Whether its eyepieces on the bookcase or binos and tripods in the lounge room or even sky and telescope magazines in the loo, constellation books / star maps beside the bed, printed photos of the Moon in the home office.....its goes on and on.
One day I'll get an observatory to put all the suff in one place.:D

After completion of the entire tattoo of the solar system was complete...
Tattooist: "They you go mate. The solar system on your stomach. I got the image off the internet."
Customer: "I said the Copernicus version, not Ptolemy's, you idiot!!!"
It's not blinding pain maybe just a bit uncomfortable like being scratched by a cat. But I'll have to agree that people have different tolerances to pain as well.:D
If you look at the hours factor I have well over 100 hours of work done and actually enjoy having them done and find it relaxing, probably like a form of acupuncture I suppose.

I am working on designing my right sleeve at the moment that will have NGC1365 featured on my shoulder and maybe one or two other astronomy based features... I love tattoos... Always have since I was 12 or 13 years old... The pain isn't that bad really, and lets face it, how many things can you spend money on that you're guaranteed to have the rest of your life?

Alex, I'll bring along my tatt books to Barambah. Might give you some ideas.:)
:lol: But they are banned aren't they?
Seriously though I've seen the scarring left by laser removal and it's worse than the original tattoo. when people ask me about tattoos I usually tell them to forget about it for 6-12 months, then after that if they still want one they are usually ready.
For those that have homemade or poorly inked tattoos consider a coverup or a re-inking of the old one.
Cheers:)

Thats my way of doing things... I draw something up, re-draw it until im happy with it, then sit on the idea for a year.. If in a years time I still like it, and still think its worth having on my body forever, then I take my drawing to an artist and start talking about colours, anything that needs changing or touching up in the drawing etc, Then I get it done... usually 12 months although 2 of mine were spur of the moment "I have a spare 4 hours... mm I think I'll get some ink" tattoos... I like them still just as much as my planned ones... The main thing in my opinion, is getting something individual and choosing the right location for each tattoo... Even the best tattoo in the wrong position can look tacky...
:thumbsup: cool Alex i cant wait to see some pics of it when you finally get it done :)
Just wondering Alex, do you have the same artist for all your work or do you have a few.
Personally I am loyal to the one artist and his style and he has done all my "ink" since I started and we have become the best of mates over the years.
He now has an apprentice as well who is colouring my back to get his time in. He is doing a great job and is very carefull so I dont mind. My tattoist lets him outline off the stencil but no freehand as yet.
cheers

same artist for all but my first.. My first was done by a mates artist, and I must say I was a little put off after that first one... it was 4.5hrs straight, no breaks, he didn't say more than 10 words to me the whole time.. The only things about the experience that I was happy with was the fact that it didnt hurt any where near what I expected to, and that the tattoo looked exactly as I drew it.. Since then I've been going to an artist who's done one of my mates whole back, right sleeve, chest piece etc.. He's been fantastic.. Its amazing how much easier a 5~6hr session is when you've got a really friendly artist chatting away while he works...
Im nearly finished drawing up my next two.. the sleeve is sort of a rough draft that I'll get the artist to re-do in his own style, just giving him a graphic idea of what im essentially after, and from there he can add in the rest... the 2nd one is for the center of my back between my shoulder blades, and is in its 3rd draft at the moment.. will start the final drawing within the week, and I plan for it to be done straight from my drawing.. That one will probably be done before the sleeve, 2 ~ 3 weeks from now, and the sleeve hopefully started in the next 2 ~ 3 months..
Sounds good Alex, looking forward to seeing some pictures of your work.
Kee, my wife is looking forward to getting more work. she goes to the same artist and has her back done along with her hips and lower stomach.
Cheers

(from ABC Online News)
Tattoos leave teenager seeing stars
A Belgian teenager has told police how she emerged from a tattoo parlour with 56 stars over one side of her face rather than the three she had asked for, prosecutors have said.
"I said this part, the top, is OK, but not the rest," Kimberley Vlaeminck, from the city of Kortrijk, north-west of Brussels, said.
The 18-year-old said she fell asleep during the procedure and woke up in pain when her nose was being tattooed.
A spokesman for Kortrijk prosecutors' office said police were investigating after a complaint from the teenager.
The tattoo artist said Ms Vlaeminck had agreed to 56 stars. "She agreed, but when her father saw it the trouble started," he said.
Ms Vlaeminck said she wanted to keep the tattoos on her forehead but would have the rest removed.

17-06-2009, 03:49 PM
its relaxing once you get used to it.... the first 20 mins is usually uncomfortable depending on how long its been since your last work was done, following that its pretty easy to deal with... Yesterdays session went over my elbows, and a little bit on my right, outside edge of my wrist... they were touchy spots.. but still nothing to cry about... :)
I suppose everybody has a different pain threshold... but im quite certain anyone could sit through a tattoo... and after a couple, im sure just about anyone could fall asleep during one..
:eyepop::eyepop: well i dont think i could have fallen asleep while getting my face done :screwy::screwy:

I'm sort of considering getting a small tattoo in about 6 months, when I get my black belt.
I'm considering a Japanese symbol, probably from one of these lists:
http://www.stockkanji.com/Martial+Arts.htm
http://www.stockkanji.com/Motivational.htm
I might get a small Southern Cross with it as well, to combine the two interests :)
I'm not sure where to put it yet either.. shoulder, chest, ankle...

Untill you're sure Mike, Sit on it.. Eventually it will hit you (pardon the pun) and you'll know exactly where it should go. With regards to Martial Arts tattoos, I think considering the dedication you've shown to learning the discipline, it should be somewhere prominent, however you may not want it visible all the time.. My personal thoughts would be to get it rather large down the side of your torso... The ribs are sensitive, but if you can discipline your mind enough to master your form of martial arts, you can focus your way through a little pain.. Kanji looks really good when its big and bold too....
Just think about it, it will come to you, and you'll know where you want it.
So you get your black belt in 6 months time do you? Congratulations will be in order indeed..
Hi Mike, Alex is right the placement of a tatt will just pop into your head one day and you'll know exactly where it is meant to go. You've got plenty of time to have a good think about. A good trick is to get a copy of what you want and enlarge it to different sizes then you can place then around your body and see how it will look before it's permanent.
Also a good idea to see how it looks in different colours other than traditional black. Reds and blues can always give things a different look.
Hi Humayan, the small of your back is ok, it's when you get near the kidneys that it starts to tickle.
As for the ribs down the side :eyepop: that really tickles. ;)

I didn't want anyone's art on my body so I designed my own full chest and back. Not stars, but futuristic biomechanical warriors with big guns.
I actually fell asleep getting mine, as Inspector Morse was on the television in front of me. The Tattooist slapped me on the back of the head and said he wasn't allowed to tattoo anyone whilst asleep.
