Anyone thinking of going to the Pony Club on the 27th Dec.?
New moon is on that Saturday and the rain prediction seems to be low.

I don't need to say it...if the weather is good I am in. I have missed few of our gatherings purely because of the **** weather we've had...

I am currently seeing if I can get home from Holidays a day earlier to get up the Pony Club for some darker skies.
Although I have had clear skies while in Qld, the sky has been littered with light pollution.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for an early departure toward home and a good night.

Cheers.

Hi Spaceace
As Geoff said you are most welcome to come to the Pony Club Sat and there should be a range of scopes and people to help out with yours.
What type of scope is it?
Weather forecast is looking a little more promising than it did earlier in the week. We can only keep fingers crossed.
A few more starters would be good....RB?...Sue?...Bones? etc...etc. GMB..If the cheer is too much use one of your filters!!!!!! Surely someone got a new scope or gear for Chrissy and is hangin' to try out?
Cheers:)

Looks like I will make it for saturday night.

We have booked into a Motel in Coffs Harbour for Boxing day night, so as to break up the drive home a little.

That means I can get home at a decent time on Saurday and prepare for the Mountain again.

Are you going Deeno ?

Rick Petrie

I also have a key. Does that mean I'm the 'Keymaster' (ghostbusters) ;)
Deeno might also have one?
Last time we were up there GTB the wrong key was on the gate.
What to do if this happens again particularly this time of year?
I think you said this would not happen again.

All,

I didn't check last time, but, does the Pony Club have mobile phone reception?

I'm on call for work, and if I receive an alert on my mobile, would have to bail in a hurry, to get online and sort out whatever has gone wrong.

Otherwise, I would definitely love to attend, and, perhaps try and get some star trails without a storm intruding. :)

I'd like to come but a bit concerned I'll get hopelessly lost (saw the link, looks like a challenge after the freeway exit). Also worried about dodgy/drunk long weekend drivers!

Anyone prepared to PM me their mobile numbers?

What time is everyone planning to arrive?

just looked at the weather channel. http://www.weatherchannel.com.au for mangrove mountain, suggesting shower or two, risk of storms. Tomorrow (sunday) showers cleaing midday.

leaving the storms out of the equations, the last we could possibly expect would be cliudy skies and looking out at present (09:25) it is definitely shaping up to that.

Rick Petrie
27-12-2008, 12:44 PM
Sure, weather is looking dodgy, however looking at the BOM satellite loops, the current cloud cover is moving eastwards fairly quickly and there is a good patch of clear stuff behind.
This probably means that we will get the showers and thunderstorms this arvo and early evening but may clear a little later in the night.
Judging by last Pony Club night, those that persevered got some great viewing in, later in the night.
Having said this I won't be held responsible if Hewey is unkind to us.
What is everyone else's opinions and hands up all those who still want to meet up and socialize and wait for something to happen ..maybe some New Year cheer and a stogie or two? :)

darkskybondi

The BOM site's still showing some rain on the way and the cloud movement on the satellite image seems to have slowed down - there's still alot of cloud over the eastern half of NSW. After a pretty tiring day, I don't think I'd be able to handle a late one tonight waiting for the cloud to clear and observing later. To all who have ventured up to the Mountain, I hope clear skies and a good time awaits you. Till next time.

darkskybondi
27-12-2008, 09:29 PM
Big gamble for me to commit to venturing all the way up there with such poor weather. Definitely would have gone if there'd been clear skies forecast.

But clear skies for those who did make it!

All,

Tonight was awesome. Awesome company and not too shabby skies, either, after 2 AM.

Highlight for me was seeing some of Andrew's neat toys, and, then some very fine views through Rick's 10". The views of Omega Centauri and M101 were a standout for me, as well as Eta Carinae and a bunch of other galaxies and fine objects.

Oh, almost forgot -- seeing Sirius /and/ Pup through the 5mm Nagler and 2x barlow!

Thanks to Rick, (Combi) Geoff, Dean and Andrew for a wonderful evening/morning.

Regards,
Humayun

If there are any other than me on holidays who is interested in viewing tonight (sunday) at the pony club, that is assuming that the sky is clear and the pony club is free of bookings.

I am not a keyholder but maybe someone with a key might be interested???

I will recheck this site at about lunch time with a weather update to see if anyone is interested, the night should still be very dark as the new was only last night

I would be interested in going tonight but do not have a key.
Not sure about the "politics" of a non-Saturday night.

Glad you guys got in some good observing last night. I did some late observing on Friday night (got to bed about 2.30am), so was too pooped to come out for another late night. Not sure the weather is looking so good for tonight. I won't be coming, but I hope you can get a few starters, Arthur.

Not sure if the Pony club is available for sunday night viewing as I don't think anyone has ever been on sundays before.
I think that you would need confirmation from the people within the club itself, and Geoff (owl) organised last night a few days prior to us going.
Geoff is on holidays at the moment but one of the moderators may know the contact to speak to to organise if possible. Both Deeno and I have keys if it could be arranged. I am unavailable for tonight but maybe if you could arrange or get approval you could let one of us know if OK.
Sorry you all missed last night as it was quite spectacular seeing conditions later. More later. Cheers

I thoroughly enjoyed Saturday night at the Pony Club.
Great to catch up with H, Rick, Geoff-Combi and to make Deeno drive all the way back from home just with a simple mobile call (very few threats were made).

It was a please to show you the toys Humayun, and I'm glad you ended up buying Leon's 50mm L f/1.2, you must have been impressed with the 85mm L on Saturday night.... LOL.

Thanks to Rick for proving he does have a filter and was willing to setup his dob just to prove it !
Lovely views were had all-round and Saturn was fantastic with edge on rings.

Cheers everyone and here's looking forward to the next meet.

Top night on Saturday and although we had to wait until earliy hours it was well worth it, as it cleared magically as Geoff left about 2am.(why does that always happen) We missed you though Geoff, but I don't think you would have made it to patrol the next morning.
I hadn't ever got to see the pup of Sirius before, but that was because I was never using that type of magnification either, and the seeing was that good. Excellent views of Saturn with those rings edge on was another highlight for me.
Great company again, RB, Deeno and good to see Amanda too, Geoff(Kombi), Humayun and friends from Sydney.
Hoping for another good rollup at next new moon. Cheers. and happy new year.
