Well, I'm somewhat pleased with this, but slightly disapointed at the same time. This is 759 images taken in AVI & wittled down to about 400 odd frames. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong in registax because I kind of expected something better than this end result..Then again it was really terrible seeing conditions this morning. Anyhow heres my first stack ever.

How about zipping it up and uploading it somewhere. A few of us can have a bit of a play with it then. From the look of it the automatic exposure is overcompensating for the large expanse of black and therefore overexposing the planet. You'd be surprised though at what can be tweeked out of these sort of shots sometimes. Or even zip and upload the final bmp. You never know what can happen with a bit of post processing. There is detail there, it can just be made out.

Hi Paul. Yeah...I'm sure it's me not being familiar with registax at all would be half the problem. & yes, it does tend to over expose. Davo offered me to upload the avi someplace so all of us can have a go at it..

Here's another go at it using different settings. I went thru the whole 700 odd frames one at a time & picked out 200 of the best. Still not real happy with this result either, Oh well.. :D

Good start John.. depending ont he camera, the avi mode may or may not be better than the single shot.

With a single shot (or burst mode single shots) you're usign the full resolution of teh camera and can crop it to get a bigger image.

Using the avi mode, you're stuck at the 320x240 or 640x480 resolution, so the image sacle is determined by the eyepiece/barlow combination you're using for afocal.

Plus, the camera can do awful compression of the avi which can mean losing data before you even get a chance to process it. So just experimenet - for you and your camera, afocal single shot may be better.

But i'm happy to try processing your avi if you want to zip it up and email it to me?

Thanks for that Mike. On the same morning, I took about 40 stills of mars as well. I'm in process of stacking them to see if theres any image improvement over AVIs or not.

As Paul said above, it seems like this camera over exposes on AVI because of the black expanse of the sky. I forgot to mention I actually stopped down the refractor to 4.75" to take the AVI & stills. I'd hate to see full aperture shots in that case!

I wonder if some kind of filter would be handy here??

How are you going with it Dave, Getting anywhere? & are you using registax to process it? The seeing conditions where lousy, as you can probably tell from the AVI.

It opens a box with the icons for the said pics & avi's as I would normally see them on my computer. One mars: (mars200509...) is a 'open with' but the others I can either view or download. I'm still in deep thought about your 1st question mate. "asimov's kodak moments" sprang to mind though.

Just thinking out loud here. Ok, my camera over exposes when taking a AVI of a planet, because of the black field surrounding it. Therefore, If I was to take an AVI of a DSO.............:) :confuse3:  :computer:

Just to let you all know, my 'theory' above does not work. I'm now the proud owner of 2 1 min long AVIs of the swan nebula...or should I say the lack of the swan nebula lol. I did actually squeeze out 6 stars in them after 4 hrs of mucking about.

I know bright DSOs like M42 work with this camera though. I'll have to forget the faint fuzzies though. Oh well.
