Animation of new Saturn Storm from 15/12/08

This is the animation of the new storm on Saturn.
It is of 7 Red channel files taken at 10 minute intervals over a 58 minute period.

You can imagine how difficult it is to spot the storm in the individual still images. The last storm earlier in the year was very easy to spot due to the higher altitude of Saturn and that storm really was a monster.
It is obviously a bigger challenge to detect smaller features with amateur equipment, that said, I am becoming quite adept at sensing the presence of these small structures

The storm is in the 3 RGB images that I posted previously but the green and especially the blue channels smother the fine detail in the red channel. As Saturn rises higher this will become less of a problem and if this storm continues then I am sure we will see some very nice RGB images of it over the ensuing months.

When I study my images during processing I find it helpful to concentrate on the region, in this case (Storm Alley) the Lat 35 Sth region and move my head from side to side trying to pick out the barest hint of structure. You really need a sequence of images, 10 minute intervals seems to work very well, to have relevant comparison images. Looking for the movement from west to east in consecutive frames for the presence of storm structure.

Still have not used my 450D on my scope. Have been organizing the software that I will need. Now this storm has formed I will be putting all of my efforts into capturing data for Georg Fischer until it dissipates.

Hi Ash,
The storm is at lat 35 Sth, dubbed Storm Alley by the Cassini Imaging Team. It is in a light coloured band between two thin dark bands. This animation tracks the storm for about an hour. The storm can be seen traversing from west to east it is small and bright. It was hard to detect in the stills but is quite obvious in this animation.

Nice work Trevor, very nice work indeed. I was lucky as the storm sort of leapt out at me; either it was optimized for my monitor or I just happened to look at the right place and spot the movement!
