Another rehash of a movie that was a classic .... bet those cretins in Hollywood stuff this one up too.

If I see it - it will be on DVD or TV , I wont be going to the pictures to see it.

How predictable. I've never seen anyone so utterly negative. Is there anything anyone can do out there that you approve of? Those "cretins" in Hollywood bought you the original...

I for one am looking forward to giving the film a chance. The original, plus several others of its ilk (Forbidden Planet et al) are favourites of mine. I know that any new takes on old movies are not doing the original any harm - they're not being "replaced" as such - so what's your problem? :mad2: Man, go get your blood pressure checked.

I won't look out for you at the theatre then.

I agree with you Chris. Ian didn't your Mum ever tell you "if you can't say anything nice.. "

Sometimes it's best just not to press Submit?

The movie looks pretty entertaining to me.

Maybe Ian should go into competition with this (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10545038) guy!

I'm really looking forward to seeing the new version.

Even if it's not great...it's an hour or two of pleasant distraction away from all the other rubbish that we occasionally have to deal with.

And if it's really good.....well....good!!!!!!!!!:D

I think that with all the modern techniques like CGI and such forth it will be quite worthwhile viewing.

I remember when they brought out Metropolis to the music of Queen, a lot of people said it was terrible but I thought it was quite brilliantly done.

Another favourite of mine too Ric. Giorgio Moroder did the modern sound track - with contributing artists such as Bonnie Tyler, Bat Benatar, Queen and others. Coupled to Fritz Lang's masterpiece it was sensational.

Moroder is a legend.

Oh, dear. Now, I've got The Chase - The Theme from Midnight Express, stuck in my head...

Just watched the preview, looks promising to be but I'm buyist when it comes to sci-fi! In the preview it looked like we were attacked with nanotech or something! Bet that wasn't in the original!

Being biased is fine - so are most of us here I'd hazard a guess. I don't think that a re-make has to follow the plot of the original line for line. In fact, I'd rather they didn't. I suppose that movie makers have to reinterpret the original script (if it wasn't derived from a novel) and add their own to it. As long as the basic premise is fulfilled (i.e. the underlying story) I'm fine with it.

I remember the original and enjoyed it. I'll wait till I see the new one to pass comment. Just watched the first 2 seasons of Battlestar Galactica, is different from the original and it took a couple of episodes to get into it. Looking forward to getting my hands on season 3 now.
Electric Dreams is a favourite of mine too, must have watched it half a dozen times. :)

I usually get dissapointed by remakes of old scifi movies. Still I am always the optimist and was quite excited when war of the worlds was announced. That remake wasnt too bad. The worst remake I ever saw was the time machine.

Still, I had a look at the trailer and i reckon this movie could be bloody great, here's hoping anyway. I will definately be forking out some money for this one.

Cheers

As a sideline I was reading that "Starship Troopers 3" is out. Blimey I didn't even know there was a "2" out.

I'd have to rate the original as a classic "B" grade cult classic.

Haven't seen ST3, Ric...but 2 was a bit ordinary.

I enjoyed the first one though, and number three has been in video stores for quite a while now.

Ah, re-makes.
Let's be brutally honest here. They don't have a very good batting average, do they?
Two of my favourite remakes were Cronenberg's The Fly and Carpenter's The Thing. Both took the original idea, gave it a slightly different spin with a competent production crew and created examples of worthwhile cinema.
Then, on the other hand, we have The Time Machine, Planet of the Apes and I Am Legend, the latter of which is about to get the prequel treatment, can you believe? I can hear Richard Matheson's anguished screams of torment from here!
So, no. I'm not real optimistic of this currant re-make that we apparently had to have, but I'm going to see it anyway and hopefully, just maybe, it will fill me with wonder and awe, just like the original did.

The AMC ? i dont know of that channel as were in oz Jeff but i did watch the original movie tonight ( and yes it is the first time ive seen it) and it must of been a blockbuster in its day and i really enjoyed it.
Now i cant wait to see the new version to compare the two.
So on that note i give it a thumbs up  Cheers Kev.

The day the earth stood still is one of my favorites. I actually picked it up on dvd last year. An absolute classic film, without the cgi special effects of these days. I am looking forward to catching Keanu Reeves as Klattu, and have seen the extended preview on youtube. There will always be some differences as a twist to the old story. Fingers crossed.
I haven't seen I am legend yet, but I'm sure it's in the christmas stocking; The Omega Man was also one of my favorites. Will Smith and Reeves are a couple of my fav actors so hopefully they should be good.

ps. Who had that avatar of Gort, the Robot from Tdtess?

Cheers

I personally thought that I Am Legend was an abysmal film. I'd initially had high hopes for it too, given that they'd reverted to the original title of Matheson's great book.
Those who may think that I'm hung up on the book are probably right, although anyone who troubles to read the book may well see where I'm coming from.
The Omega Man wasn't, in my humble opinion, a very good adaption, but it was at least an enjoyable film.
An even earlier adaption was The Last Man, starring Vincent Price(!) as the lead character which was ..um.. different.
Having endured I Am Legend, you'd have to strap me into a cinema seat with a straitjacket and eyeclamps (a la Clockwork Orange) to get me to watch the forthcoming prequel.
"New" does not always equal "good", sadly.
Still and all, I'll be going to see the new DTESS. The original was such a strong story that it's difficult to see how they could stuff it up.
(But then I remember I Am Legend,:scared: and icey fingers of fear slither and contract around my palpitating heart.)

Come on guys, different stokes for different folks. :)

Personally I enjoyed both 'I am legend' and the modern remake of 'The Time machine'. Neither are great films, but I found them enjoyable. Then again I am a bit of a Will Smith and Guy Pierce Fan, (not to mention Samantha Mumba ) so that probably helps.

I have not read the original books they are based on. Its been a while since I saw the 1960's verison of the Time Machine, but I watched 'The Omega Man' recently, and actually much prefer 'I am legend'.

Im looking forward to the day the earth stood still remake, but I do understand the cynicism people have to remakes, since there have been some very average ones. Their usually not terrible, but they are sometimes very 'paint by numbers' efforts that dont show any real freshness or new orginality. (Im thinking of 'Flight of the Pheonix' here!)

That's pretty fair Tim. As you say, different strokes for different folks.
I'm only too aware that the majority of people seem to have enjoyed I Am Legend, otherwise it wouldn't be getting the prequel treatment.
I know for a fact that various films I've enjoyed have been seen as turkeys by a majority of the viewing public. One example is Tank Girl, a film that I enjoyed immensely, but I appear to be a minority of one there.:D
There's no accounting for taste (yours or mine) and if I've denigrated something that you've enjoyed, then the fault is mine and I apologise without reserve.
I will say though that you wouldn't be doing yourself a disfavour by reading Matheson's I Am Legend or Wells' Time Machine, if only to see why various people went to the time, trouble and expense to try and adapt these great stories to the medium of film.
Cheers mate.

Sci-fi is sci-fi leave your brains at the door there are rarely sci-fi films that do the term justice however if you are prepared to park your brain and enjoy them for what they are then you do. I've seen a lot of remakes and sequels

KK ( V i,ii,iii), Omega man (i am Legend), Planet of the Apes all of them, Time Machine,WOTW, The Thing, 2001, 2010, T1 2 3, The Blob, They Came to Earth, and as far as sci-fi goes some of the best never get remade eg: Forbidden Planet, Silent Running, 1984, and some shouldn't be like Black Hole, Saturn 5, Buckaroo banzai across the 8th dimension, Cone heads, Battlefield Earth.

but in saying that if you like sci-fi for what it is then you'll enjoy all of them regardless. So I'll be watching this one

I heartily agree Trevor. I don't see that it is the mission of the film "re-maker" to satisfy anyones desire for a better, or at least "as good as" (whatever that is and however it can be qualified) film than the original. If you don't like re-makes then don't go and see them. Simple!

Tank girl is cool little flick! Its been years since I watched it, so I will have have watch it again now :)

Hey, Im used to people bagging my taste (esp my wife!) so it would have to be in the order of 'Pink Floyd sucks!' to really piss me off

I know, I know...For some reason I have an aversion to HG wells - I remember trying to read 'war of the worlds' when I was about 12 or 13 and was put off by the writing style. I was probably too young to appreciate it - but I had just finished off all of Tolkien's stuff, and it left me flat

I've been thinking about this a little (I said little!! LOL). "Wonder and awe" is what you experience when you may see or be introduced to something new for the first time. I doubt that we have much "wonder" left in us after 50+ years of scifi film making at all - I think that it's all been covered by now. New films will never instill that sense in us again - so we are, I think, looking for something else nowadays. I don't see that it's a requirement any more, but nice if it happens.

The first generation of 50's scifi films had a clean slate on which to deliver new notions and ideas about what may be out there (or in "here"). Some say that it was a partial reaction to the cold war politics of the day. There was a range of films that took several similar visitation themes and each ran with them in their own way - with just about all of them moralising in some way or other to make the hometown team feel that they were safe while they were in bed tucked up under the blanket.

The Day the Earth Stood Still was a film made to highlight the threat implied by the then nuclear arms race, and that if humankind weren't smart enough to do something about it themselves that an alien society would play daddy and smack us from afar. It's a different world today. Nuclear threat isn't as dominant in the headlines as it was back then.

Whether you scientifically agree with it or not, today's (supposed) threat is that of humanind falling foul of global warming by their "own" doing. I personally have a problem with this, but it seems as though the media has revved it up as a cause worldwide, so we are going to get films about it - that's inevitable. So - don't expect a remake that's trying to be as "good" as the first. They are two different films - entirely. The only common thread is that of humanity's own propensity to annahilate itself if it doesn't snap out of its daze once in a while, and that there "might" be some external influence (be it a "God" or an alien super-society) that we should be afraid of making sure of it if we decide to forget or neglect. "Fear" what you can never see...

I'm going to see it for the special effects, and the the pure (as was mentioned before) "leave your brain at the door" experience. I can't wait. Box office takings in America are way down on expected, and even lower than those of I Am Legend, so it may turn out to be one of those cult films that the mainstream just doesn't have time for any more. Either that or it's the world reacting to Keanu Reeves taking himself a little seriously. Every time I see the guy I think of Bill & Ted. Maybe it's true - a film is only as good as the reputation of the lead actors.
